Cowboys To Use Franchise Tag On Dez Bryant If No Agreement Reached

Dec 24, 2014 12:38 PM

The Dallas Cowboys are prepared to use their franchise tag on Dez Bryant if they're unable to agree upon a long-term contract.

Jerry Jones made his comments on 105.3 The Fan Dallas/Fort Worth, confirming what had been widely expected.

"No, we have the franchise -- for sure. Not at all," he replied. "You're talking about Dez? No, we have the franchise alternative -- which I thought everybody was aware of."

Earlier in the interview, Jones had talked about the status of negotiations between the Cowboys and Bryant.

"The key thing is, in agreements -- and these are agreements -- to be trite, two have to agree," Jones said in the interview. "We've just got to come to an agreement there."

Jones added that the Cowboys have "got to really look at how we go forward managing our dollars."

"Every dollar that one player gets is not there for the next player or for another player. And so this thing has to be balanced out," he said.

Romo: Jerry Jones' Best Move Was Keeping Jason Garrett

Dec 22, 2014 12:52 PM

Jason Garrett was nearly fired after past disappointing seasons, but Jerry Jones kept him as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Tony Romo sees Jones' decision to stick with Garrett as critical to their 2014 success.

"Jason is the best head coach in the league that no one talks about," Romo said Sunday, per the Dallas Morning News. "I mean, he's really gifted at his ability to communicate to his players. He's got a great mind for the game of football.

"One of the best things Jerry (Jones) has done was just stand by him and let his system, his mantra, his philosophy play itself out. I think that you're seeing the dividends. You're reaping the rewards of having him stay in place.

"Jason is going to figure it out. He's as good of a coach as I've ever been around. He's special.''

DeMarco Murray To Play Week 16 With Protective Pad

Dec 22, 2014 11:31 AM

DeMarco Murray will play in Week 16 with a protective pad on his left hand, which was broken last Sunday.

The Dallas Cowboys are "a little nervous" about telegraphing their plays with Murray in the game and concerned with how much he can do in the passing game and blocking.

If Murray is ineffective early, expect the Cowboys to move to a heavier running back by committee approach.

DeMarco Murray To Undergo Hand Surgery, Status Uncertain For Week 16

Dec 16, 2014 11:11 AM

DeMarco Murray will undergo hand surgery this week, leaving his status for Week 16 in doubt.

Murray suffered a broken fourth metacarpal bone in his left hand, a source told ESPN.com. The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys' 38-27 win against the Philadelphia Eagles.

After the game, Murray said he was "good," but he did not elaborate about his hand. He had X-rays taken after the game and was examined further Monday.

The fourth metacarpal is the long bone in the hand that runs from the base of the fourth finger to the wrist.

Tony Romo Has Torn Rib Cartilage

Dec 7, 2014 12:59 PM

The NFL is investigating why Tony Romo hasn't been on the Dallas Cowboys' injury report with his rib issue.

Romo said after Thursday night's 41-28 win against the Chicago Bears that he was playing with a broken rib. However, multiple sources say Romo misspoke and that he had torn rib cartilage, not a break.

A team is subject to a fine if the league finds it did not comply with its injury report rules. In 2009, the New York Jets were assessed $125,000 in fines for failing to put quarterback Brett Favre on the injury report after he revealed he played the final month of the 2008 season with a torn biceps tendon.

Romo has been listed on the injury report all season because of his back.
