Bears Cut J'Marcus Webb

May 18, 2014 8:25 AM

The Chicago Bears have cut J'Marcus Webb.

Webb took a pay cut earlier in August.

Jordan Mills will start for the Bears at right tackle.

Webb started 44 of the 46 games he played for the Bears over the past three years.

Jay Cutler demonstratively yelled at Webb during a nationally televised loss to the Green Bay Packers last season.

Forte Putting Up Huge Preseason Numbers In New System

May 18, 2014 8:23 AM

Matt Forte has averaged 10.7 yards per rushing attempt over his past four quarters. Forte had 76 yards on six attempts on Friday against the Oakland Raiders.

“What makes the zone blocking good is those linemen get push off the ball,” Forte said. “When they can do that, I can be patient and just sit back and read the blocking. So [while] there’s a place where the play is designed to go, you can just use your vision. If I want to, I can cut it all the way back. Or I can just pick a hole. That’s what makes it so nice.”

Jay Cutler called Forte “scary out there” on the field.

“I think he’s getting more and more comfortable with the running lanes, the blocking schemes we’re putting him in,” Cutler said.

Bears Demote J'Marcus Webb

May 28, 2014 12:24 AM

The Chicago Bears have demoted J'Marcus Webb as their staring right tackle, though the team claims it is a planned move to get him more reps on the second team at left tackle.

Jordan Mills is scheduled to start in Webb's right tackle spot and Webb backing up Jermon Bushrod at left tackle.

"If he's going to be on our team, if he makes our eight (offensive linemen that make the 53-man roster), then he's going to have to play more than one spot, and this is an opportunity for him to get those reps," said offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer. "You don't want to have to do it on Wednesday of game week. You want to do it early in the season so he has a feel for what's going on."

Be The GM: Aaron Rodgers Or Brandon Marshall

Aug 31, 2014 11:16 PM

When Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears in 2009, it looked like he and Aaron Rodgers would begin a great NFC North rivalry at the quarterback position. There has been no comparison at all between the two players in the four subsequent seasons with Rodgers going on a historical run with a Super Bowl in 2010 and the NFL MVP in 2011 after a 15-1 season.

With Cutler out of the top-10 at the quarterback position and now 30, he isn't even our choice to be nominated from the Bears as that distinction goes to Brandon Marshall.

In the five seasons Rodgers has been the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, he has ranked sixth, fourth, third, first and first in passer rating and now is the career-leader at 104.9.

Rodgers was a highly accurate quarterback at Cal, but his lack of arm strength caused him to slide all the way to the Packers at 24th in the 2005 NFL Draft. Similar to Tom Brady, Rodgers significantly improved his physical profile once arriving in the NFL to make the type of throws that the way he reads the field allows possible.

Rodgers has a 52-26 record as a starter and that has come with a rotating cast of receivers and often a patchwork offensive line. Rodgers has mastered the West Coast offense in a way that would make Bill Walsh proud and he is truly a blend between Joe Montana and Steve Young given his playmaking abilities both in the pocket and in the open field with his running.

Marshall earned the Baby T.O. nickname early in his career and has produced to that effect with 1,241 yards per season in years two through six. Marshall has put up those numbers, however, on largely mediocre teams and is one of the best active players in the NFL to have never appeared in a playoff game.

Marshall is now 29 and is coming off the most productive season of his career, catching 118 balls for 1,508 yards and 11 touchdowns. He will almost certainly regress somewhat in 2013, but it is hard to envision him dropping below 85 yards per game. Marshall is physically one of the best talents at wide receiver and he also is supremely gifted as a route runner, even when compared to other elite players like Calvin Johnson.

Bears Considering Read-Option

Sep 9, 2014 8:33 PM

The Chicago Bears are considering using the read-option with Jay Cutler.

Cutler has the seventh-most rushing yards at quarterback since 2006.

"Jay has the skill set to do just about everything, anything," Marc Trestman said. "We are trying to give him the things he has had the most success with first.

"Whether we'll do it, I don't know. We've studied it."

The Beras have used elements of the read-option in practice, but Cutler has not begun studying it.

"There is no question Jay is athletic enough," McCown said. "All three of us could get it done if we needed to. It's going to have to be a part of (the offense) a little bit because we are going to have to give our defense looks on it because it's so successful in our league. We're all waiting to see if the defenses can stop it."
