Buffalo Bills cornerback Vontae Davis abruptly retired at halftime of the team's 31-20 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Davis said he meant no disrespect to his teammates and coaches, but that physically, he could no longer play at the standard he set for himself.

"[He] pulled himself out of the game," Sean McDermott said. "He communicated to us that he was done."

After the game, Lorenzo Alexander expressed his displeasure with the timing of Davis' retirement.

"I never have seen that," Alexander said. "Pop Warner, high school, pros. Never heard of it. Never seen it. It's just completely disrespectful to his teammates. ... He didn't say nothing to nobody. I found out going into the second half of the game. They said he's not coming out, he retired. That's it."

Josh Allen will start for the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Nathan Peterman started Week 1 for the Bills but was benched during the middle of the game.

The Bills used a first round pick on Allen.

The Buffalo Bills have worked out Paxton Lynch.

Lynch was released this weekend by the Denver Broncos.

The Bills have Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen on their depth chart at quarterback.

The Buffalo Bills have announced that Nathan Peterman will start in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Peterman was a fifth-round pick in 2017. He appeared in four games as a rookie.

He gets the nod over Josh Allen, who the Bills took seventh overall in this year's draft.

The Oakland Raiders have acquired A.J. McCarron from the Buffalo Bills for a fifth-round pick in 2019.

The Raiders will owe McCarron his fully guaranteed $900,000 base salary this season.

Oakland released Connor Cook on Saturday.

McCarron signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Bills in March. He can earn an additional $4.5 million this season in playing-time incentives from the Raiders.
