Ranking The NFL's Oldest, Youngest Starters By Team

Oct 31, 2014 2:22 PM

The Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens have the three oldest collections of starters in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals are the youngest.

Former Vikings head coach Bud Grant had a popular saying that "for every young guy you start, you lose a game."

Pete Carroll worked for Grant early in his coaching career, but has had one of the youngest teams in the NFL during his tenure with the Seahawks.

"I was of that mindset in classic fashion until I had to be in charge of calling all the shots and then it just flipped in me that we don't know where we're going unless we find these guys out," Carroll said. "One of the really exciting things about playing guys early is ... by the middle and to the end of the season, you’ve developed players that fit into your rotations now that add to your depth and also add to the opportunity to not over-play your older guys."

Below is a full list with the rank in offense/defense in parenthesis.

1. Atlanta Falcons (2/5)
2. San Diego Chargers (7/3)
3. Baltimore Ravens (1/15)

Ray Lewis: Playing In Baltimore Bigger Than Any Championship

Oct 31, 2014 3:07 PM

Ray Lewis has played 16 NFL seasons, all with the Baltimore Ravens. Lewis is 37 but continues to play at a high level as the inspirational leader of the Ravens' defense.

Lewis would never consider playing for another team.

"No way. Never, I would never play nowhere else," said Lewis. "That city… You know, sometimes when God crowns you with a city, it's bigger than any championship. And that city is in love with me as much as I'm in love with it. My purpose was there."

Lewis believes the Ravens are even better this year than last when they were a Billy Cundiff field goal away from reaching the Super Bowl.

"We're stronger," said Lewis. "Every year we've been making a run at the playoffs, and people don't really understand how young we are. [Starting quarterback] Joe Flacco and [running back] Ray Rice are young. [Wide receiver] Torrey Smith was a rookie last year."

Lewis also told the Guardian that he believes being charged with murder early in his career helped shape him.

"If I hadn't gone through that [the murder accusation], I wouldn't be speaking to you today," says Lewis. "It's the only reason that God used me to go through it. Because he knew that I would never turn my back on him. Now he receives all the glory, because he was able to expose who I was as a person, through a tragedy.

"Now everybody who meets me says, 'Oh, you're nothing like I thought you was.' Well you never met me! But when people meet me, they meet what my mother raised, which was a hell of a man, by herself. And that's my honor, that's what my goal is, to always keep my mom's name ringing, because I know what sacrifices she went through for me."

Ravens Cut Cundiff In Favor Of Cheaper Rookie

Aug 18, 2014 11:54 AM

The Ravens have cut Billy Cundiff, opting to go with rookie kicker Justin Tucker for the 2012 season.

Tucker, who comes at a cheaper price, is 5-for-5 in the preseason and how shown more leg strength than Cundiff.

Tucker was invited to camp as an undrafted free agent to challenge Cundiff, who made the Pro Bowl in 2010. Cundiff missed a potential game-tying, 32-yarder against New England in the waning seconds of the AFC title game.

Bears, Packers, Steelers, Raiders Rated As Having Best Uniforms

Nov 30, 2014 8:24 AM

The Bears have the best uniforms in the NFL, according to Paul Lukas of Uni Watch.

"True, the helmet design is starting to look a tad dated," writes Lukas. "But the striped sleeves, striped socks (now a rarity in the NFL, alas), unique number font, and even the perma-memorial to Papa Bear all score major points, and the Bears may be the only team in the league who look as sharp on the road as they do at home. The cream of the NFL crop."

The Packers, Steelers, Raiders and Eagles round out the top-five.

"Just suit up, baby," writes Lukas about the Raiders. "Silver and black look just as good today as they did when Al Davis came up with them. There's probably some marketer out there who wants the team to dress up like the fans in the Black Hole (and hey, that actually could be fun as a one-off thing), but you don't mess with something this elemental. Also: The Raiders are among the few NFL teams that wisely have declined to adopt the new Nike collar format."
