Bills Hire Kathryn Smith, NFL's First Full-Time Female Coach

Jan 21, 2016 3:17 PM

The Buffalo Bills have hired Kathryn Smith as quality control-special teams coach.

Smith is the NFL's first full-time coach.

The move comes less than a year after the Arizona Cardinals hired Jen Welter to serve as a training-camp assistant coach.

"Kathryn Smith has done an outstanding job in the seven years that she has worked with our staff," Bills coach Rex Ryan said in a statement released by the team. "She certainly deserves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment, just to name a couple of her outstanding qualities, and I just know she's going to do a great job serving in the role of quality control-special teams.

"I consulted with (Cardinals coach) Bruce Arians on this since he was really the first NFL head coach to make this kind of move when he hired a female linebackers coach through the summer," Ryan continued. "You can see the success some of these young ladies are having in the coaching profession, such as the young lady (Becky Hammon) that is an assistant to Coach (Greg) Popovich at the San Antonio Spurs, and realize how exciting this is for women like Kathryn Smith as well as the Bills organization."

According to the team's website, Smith served as an administrative assistant under Ryan this past season. She held the same role with Ryan in his final season as Jets coach in 2014. She also worked as a player personnel assistant with the Jets for seven years.

LeSean McCoy To 49ers: Buy In With Chip, No Matter How Crazy It Sounds

Jan 20, 2016 12:43 PM

LeSean McCoy was asked for offer advice to the San Francisco 49ers' players on how to best adapt to Chip Kelly.

McCoy played for Kelly for two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before he was traded to the Buffalo Bills.

"Every situation is different," McCoy said. "The one thing I will say about Chip is that he wants to win. He's very, very intelligent. The offense, they'll find ways to get the big numbers. They'll find ways to put the stats up offensively. With him coming in there, no matter how good of a player or low player you are, if you just automatically believe him -- no matter if it sounds crazy, you're like what is he talking about -- if you just automatically believe and buy in, I think you'll be fine."

Bills Unsure Of Percy Harvin's Plans

Jan 20, 2016 12:41 PM

Percy Harvin spent the final 11 games of the 2015 season on injured reserve and is considering retirement.

Harvin's future with the Buffalo Bills is a mystery, even to the team.

"Percy Harvin was supposed to be a big help for us and we're still not sure what's going on," Jim Monos, the team's director of player personnel, told WGR-AM on Tuesday, per ESPN.com's Mike Rodak. "He's got to make some decisions here coming up. We need to get somebody opposite of (wideout) Sammy (Watkins) to be a real threat to that defense. I think that's a big key for our offense, to take one more step."

Cutting Harvin would cost the Bills $1 million in dead money both in 2016 and 2017.

Bills Plan On Cutting Mario Williams

Jan 1, 2016 2:10 PM

The Buffalo Bills will release Mario Williams in the offseason.

There is a "clear, fundamental disconnect" between  Rex Ryan and his defensive line and Williams might be at the heart of the trouble.

Williams has openly questioned his role as well as how other pass rushers are being used this season.
