Bills' GM: Football Is A Violent Game Humans Not Supposed To Play

May 25, 2016 11:52 AM

Doug Whaley, general manager of the Buffalo Bills, responded to a question regarding whether Sammy Watkins is injury-prone by wondering why it is surprising that football players get injured so often.

"I wouldn't say [he's injury-prone]. If you look at his game log, he's only missed three games. So is he injury-prone? I wouldn't say that. Are things going to come up with a guy like this? We hope that gets limited in the future," Whaley said, before stating his broader thoughts on football.

"This is the game of football," he told WGR 550 radio. "Injuries are part of it. It's a violent game that I personally don't think humans are supposed to play."

Watkins underwent surgery this offseason on a broken foot.

Shaq Lawson To Undergo Shoulder Surgery

May 16, 2016 3:11 PM

Shaq Lawson will undergo shoulder surgery.

Lawson was the 19th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.

Lawson had insisted after the draft that he wouldn't need surgery, but the Bills on Monday said they would go ahead with the procedure on Tuesday as a preventative measure.

The Bills said in the statement that Lawson had an occurrence of the condition last week but was still moving forward with the idea that he would participate in the offseason program.

"I want to take this opportunity to commend Shaq Lawson and his representatives for putting the team first by having this surgery on his shoulder done now," Bills general manager Doug Whaley said in a statement. "By doing so, he's forsaking personal goals to be 100 percent healthy when we will need him most during the regular season.

"Fans constantly hear us say that we want players with tremendous character who keep team goals ahead of personal ones and Shaq is a great example of this."

The Buffalo Bills plan on having at least three rookie starters on defense this season.

"At least three," Whaley said. "Shaq Lawson is going to walk in off the bus starting. Reggie Ragland and then Adolphus Washington -- all three of those guys will start right off the bus. And we're excited for some guys from the fourth through sixth rounds that will contribute for us."

The Bills selected Lawson 19th overall and is expected to replace Mario Williams on their defensive line.

Ragland went 41st overall at linebacker and Washington was picked 80th to give Rex Ryan another option on the defensive line.
