Michael Bennett Skips OTAs, 'Trying To Get Contract Right'

May 31, 2015 11:18 PM

Michael Bennett was a no-show for the Seattle Seahawks' organized team activities this week as he attempts to get a new contract.

"Trying to get the contract right," Bennett said Friday at a charity event, per The Seattle Times. "I'll be there shortly. I don't know when I'll be there. Depends on the team and stuff. See how it works out."

In just the second season of a four-year, $28.5 million deal he inked last March, Bennett confirmed that he asked Seattle's front office for more money.

"Somewhere near the top seven at my position, top eight at my position," Bennett said after playing 85 percent of the team's snaps on defense last season. "Not a lot of guys play inside and out (tackle and end). Not a lot of guys do what I do. So I feel like I should be somewhere near there."

Said Bennett: "I just want to be in the realm of the guys that play like me."

Agent: Russell Wilson's Contracts With Seattle 'Positive, Encouraging'

May 28, 2015 12:52 PM

Mark Rodgers, the agent for Russell Wilson, said Thursday that negotiations on a new contract with the Seattle Seahawks have been "positive and encouraging," but there is no deadline for getting a new deal done.

"We've had an ongoing dialogue, not all of it being a negotiation,'' Rodgers told 710 ESPN radio in Seattle in his first public comments about the negotiations. "Some of it just being philosophical and really trying to understand each other's positions.

"I would characterize our talks as ongoing, fluid, robust at times, thoughtful and we've made progress. Frankly, about 95 percent of the speculation has been off point. I would characterize [the negotiations] as positive and encouraging."

Wilson is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which will pay him $1.54 million this season. He signed a four-year, $2.99 million deal in May 2012 after the Seahawks drafted him in the third round.

Wilson is believed to be seeking a contract worth more than $100 million over five years.

Carroll: Communication With Russell Wilson On Contract Has Been Great

May 28, 2015 12:03 PM

Pete Carroll said the Seattle Seahawks have had good conversations with Russell Wilson on a new contract.

"So hopefully we'll get something done," Carroll said. "But if we don't, we'll just have to deal with that. But we're very close in our conversation and our exchanging process through this. Our communication has been great."

When asked the likelihood of a deal getting done worked out before training camp begins in late July, Carroll said, "I don't know. I'm not talking about that right now."

Wilson is scheduled to make $1.5 million this season in the last year of his rookie deal. He is believed to be seeking a multiyear deal in excess of $100 million.

Carroll was asked how Wilson is dealing with the contract situation.

"I think as much as anybody can deal with it, Russell will," Carroll said. "We've talked a lot about the process of it and all of that and the expectations. He's had a great offseason. He's looked incredibly in-shape and faster than ever. He's worked great on the field when he's been with us. He's really set his mind to it. The proof is in the action of what he can put out there. He's on it."

"I'm going to be in Atlanta next season," Irvin told BlackSportsOnline.com while attending the Eastern Conference semifinals in Atlanta on Wednesday night. "I'm ready."

Frank Clark Threatened Hotel Manager

May 9, 2015 3:37 PM

A hotel night manager told police that Frank Clark threatened her and admitted hitting his girlfriend during a Nov. 15 altercation, according to newly released documents.

Clark was a second round draft pick by the Seattle Seahawks.

In a statement to police in Sandusky, Ohio, the day after the incident, manager Stephanie Burkhardt wrote that soon after she entered the couple’s hotel room Clark told her, “I will hit you like I hit her” and shouldered her out of the way before leaving.

Clark declined to discuss details of the case Friday at the Seahawks’ training facility in Renton but has denied striking his then-girlfriend, Diamond Hurt.

“I’ve been honest and up front this whole time as much as I can,” he said Friday. “Everything I’ve said to the coaches, to everyone who’s questioned me about it, I’ve been honest and up front from the very beginning. That’s all I can do.”

Michael Bennett Wants Raise From Seahawks, Not Trade

May 8, 2015 8:58 PM

Michael Bennett doesn't want to be traded by the Seattle Seahawks, but he is seeking a raise.

"I think everyone who has a job, they want a raise for whatever they're doing," Bennett said Thursday on KING-TV, via ESPN. "I'm just like any other American. I think everybody wants to be paid a little bit more. So I don't think I fall short of that."

He added: "People assume when you ask for a little more money, they assume that you want to be traded or something like that. But that's not what I'm trying to go for."

Bennett is entered the second year of a four-year, $32 million contract with $16 million guaranteed.

Bennett is 29 and has been one of the NFL's most productive defensive ends since joining the Seahawks.

Seahawks Decline 2016 Fifth-Year Option On Bruce Irvin

May 4, 2015 4:20 PM

The Seattle Seahawks declined their 2016 fifth-year option on Bruce Irvin.

Irvin would have been paid $7.8 million 2016, but he'll instead become a free agent next offseason.

"Worked for everything I got in my life this s--- will b no different!" Irvin tweeted early Monday. "I earns my keeps!"

Irvin will play this season at $1.5 million.

"Faced way tougher adversity getting outta them streets coming up!" Irvin tweeted. "That's s--- is nothing! F--- THAT OPTION!"

Pete Carroll said Saturday that the team hopes to re-sign Irvin. "We met with Bruce [on Friday], and it went very well," Carroll said. "We discussed what our plan is and what we are planning on doing. It has nothing to do with the statement of how we feel about him in our program. We expect him to be here for a long time and we will work to get that done."

Seahawks Waiting To Hear From Russell Wilson On Contract

May 3, 2015 10:54 PM

Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks have held "ongoing"  contract extension talks, but Pete Carroll admitted they're going slow.

Carroll specifically said that the team is “waiting to hear from their side.”

Shortly after Carroll’s interview, Wilson responded with this message on Twitter:  “I’d rather patiently wait & see what God has in store than do something that isn’t best for my life.”

Wilson could decide to play out his contract, forcing the Seahawks to decide whether to apply the exclusive or nonexclusive version of the franchise tag.
