49ers To Start Jimmy Garoppolo Week 13

Nov 30, 2017 1:40 PM

The San Francisco 49ers will start Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback for Week 13 against the Bears.

Garoppolo played the last 1:07 during last Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks after C.J. Beathard went down with an injury.

The 49ers acquired Garoppolo from the Patriots ahead of the deadline.

49ers To Decide On Starting Quarterback Midweek

Nov 28, 2017 11:41 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have yet to choose between C.J. Beathard and Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback this week.

Kyle Shanahan said Beathard is "pretty banged up." He suffered a bruised left knee and hip strain this past Sunday.

"I will probably have an answer for you guys on Wednesday," Shanahan said. "I'd like to talk about it [with] the staff, I'd like to watch some Chicago first. We just finished up Seattle, just finished up watching the game with the quarterbacks, then came in here -- but I'll have a decision for you guys by Wednesday."

49ers Anticipate Signing Jimmy Garoppolo To Franchise Tag

Nov 27, 2017 1:27 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are anticipating signing Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year franchise tag in the offseason that will be worth approximately $25 million.

The 49ers have ample cap space to sign Garoppolo to that rich of a one-year deal.

“He does not have to play (this season),” Kyle Shanahan said. “It’s not that we’re coming to this deadline and we’ve got to decide our future, ours and his, for both sides. We’ve got six games left and we’re going to have next year, also. I know you have to franchise a quarterback to keep him, but quarterbacks are expensive. And that is not that big of a deal to us.”

The franchise tag would give the 49ers more information before committing long-term.

“It would be great if it could work out that way (a long-term contract), but that’s just not the situation any of us are in,” Shanahan said. “So you want to play it out. That is the good thing about the franchise tag and that’s what, to me, made it an easier decision to trade for him at the time we did to where it’s - I don’t want to do anything very impulsive that could put our team at risk.

“But that’s what’s cool about having something like (the franchise tag): Hey, alright, I would love to have a guy like that, especially for only a second-round pick. Definitely. Do we have to make a decision this fast for the future in terms of a long-term deal and everything? No, you don’t. If you do, and it works out, and you feel great about it, that’s awesome. But if not, that’s why the rules are the way they are.”

Jimmy Garoppolo May Not 'Feel Totally Comfortable' Until 2018

Nov 17, 2017 7:09 PM

The San Francisco 49ers may not play Jimmy Garoppolo at all this season.

"[Due to] NFL rules, we've got to give these guys at least four days off away from all coaches," Kyle Shanahan said on the "Murph & Mac" show. "We got to meet up there with Jimmy [Garoppolo] Monday through Wednesday, got a little head start with him, and we're going to give him a lot more practice reps next Monday."

C.J. Beathard has been familiarizing himself with the 49ers' playbook since May while Garoppolo is taking a crash course to learn their offense.

"It's going well," Shanahan said. "He's coming along. In my opinion, you won't feel totally comfortable with it until next year. But he's getting a chance because he's been grinding pretty hard, spending a lot of extra time up there with Rich Scangarello, our quarterback coach, and he's been really finding a way to where when he does get in, he can function. He knows a set group of plays. It's not just pass plays. He's got to be able to get us in and out of the right runs, all the situational calls, the short-yardage, the third downs, and he's come along with that.

"It's something that I don't think you ever fully grasp until you've done it for a while. Even C.J. is still working his way through that. He had all of OTAs, all of training camp. He's been part of a game plan going on ten-straight weeks now. He's got a head start with that but it takes guys a while, and I think Jimmy's moving along as fast as he possibly can."

Marquise Goodwin Scores 83-Yard TD Hours After Losing Baby Boy

Nov 13, 2017 8:28 AM

After scoring a lengthy touchdown in the first win of the season for the San Francisco 49ers, Marquise Goodwin posted to his Instagram account that he and his wife's baby boy died Sunday morning because of complications during her pregnancy.

Goodwin's 83-yard touchdown connection with C.J. Beathard was San Francisco's longest play of the season.

"Unfortunately, we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4 a.m.," Goodwin wrote. "Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan.

"The pain (physically, mentally & emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. Please pray for the Goodwin family."

Goodwin blew a kiss to the sky before he crossed the goal line. He then knelt in prayer in the end zone as his teammates surrounded him.

Jimmy Garoppolo Won't Start For 49ers In Week 10

Nov 7, 2017 9:14 AM

The San Francisco 49ers won't start Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 10.

Kyle Shanahan said the plan remains for Garoppolo, who they acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots last week, to backup C.J. Beathard and play only in the event of an injury.

Garoppolo acknowledged Sunday that the past week has been a whirlwind as he has attempted to learn Shanahan's offense quickly enough to play if called upon. He spent most of Sunday attempting to take the playcalls he heard through his helmet and go through them mentally as they unfolded on the field.

"Some of the calls I know and some I don't right now, so I was just trying to get as much as I can as fast as I can," Garoppolo said. "It's a process, so I'm just working every day to get better."

After playing the New York Giants this week, the 49ers have a bye.

49ers Asked Patriots If They Could Trade For Tom Brady

Nov 5, 2017 1:05 PM

The San Francisco 49ers inquired about the availability of Tom Brady when initially contacting the New England Patriots about a tarde.

John Lynch reportedly asked Bill Belichick if he'd trade Brady, who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Brady is 40 years old and the 49ers are in the middle of a rebuild.

The 49ers ultimately agreed to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo.

Roger Goodell To Be Deposed In Kaepernick Collusion Case

Nov 5, 2017 8:36 AM

Roger Goodell will be deposed and asked to turn over all cell phone records and emails in relation to the Colin Kaepernick collusion case against the NFL.

Several NFL owners will also be deposed.

Kaepernick's attorney said in October that he had filed a grievance under the collective bargaining agreement alleging collusion against signing him to an NFL contract.

The filing, which demands an arbitration hearing on the matter, says the NFL and its owners "have colluded to deprive Mr. Kaepernick of employment rights in retaliation for Mr. Kaepernick's leadership and advocacy for equality and social justice and his bringing awareness to peculiar institutions still undermining racial equality in the United States."

Kaepernick has not been with an NFL team since severing his contract with the 49ers in March.

49ers Not Yet Committed To Jimmy Garoppolo

Nov 5, 2017 8:34 AM

The San Francisco 49ers aren't necessarily committed to signing Jimmy Garoppolo to a long-term contract.

The 49ers have approximately $60 million in cap space should they want to pursue Kirk Cousins, or they could use their high first round pick on a quarterback in the draft.

The 49ers could use a franchise tag on Garoppolo and then trade him. Sources say there would be interest where the 49ers could get back more than the second round pick they traded to the Patriots.

At the very least, Garoppolo will be a place holder that gives the 49ers flexibility.

49ers May Not Play Jimmy Garoppolo This Season

Nov 1, 2017 4:06 PM

The San Francisco 49ers traded what will be a high second round pick to the New England Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo, who will be a free agent this offseason. But the 49ers don't appear in a rush to evaluate Garoppolo, who has only attempted 94 career passes.

"I can't promise you that he will play this year," said Kyle Shanahan.

Garoppolo only started two games for the Patriots during Tom Brady's suspension before he was injured.
