49ers coach Mike Nolan believes that Vernon Davis is too emotional after the young tight end made a scene on the sideline this past Sunday. Davis gestured wildly, insinuating that he wants more passes thrown his way. "It was just me being me," Davis said Monday. "That's what this game is about. It's about competing and dominating your opponents every time. But you have to have the opportunity." Nolan yanked Davis off the field after the incident and told him to calm down. He never returned to the action over the final 6:20 of a 31-17 loss to the Saints. "Any player that's in that kind of mode, I don't think it's best to stay on the field," Nolan said afterward.

The 49ers will retire quarterback Steve Young's No.8 jersey on October 5, the National Football League team said on Thursday, as reported by Yahoo.com. Young will become the 11th player in the club's history to have his number retired when he is honored at halftime of a game against the Patriots.

With the San Francisco 49ers next on the schedule for the Patriots, it offers an opportunity for Adalius Thomas to reflect on an important choice he made in his career. When Thomas was a free agent in March 2007, two teams jumped to the forefront as suitors - the Patriots and 49ers. One of the draws to possibly playing for the 49ers was Coach Mike Nolan, who had been Thomas's defensive coordinator in Baltimore. Thomas never traveled to San Francisco on a free agent visit, but he seriously entertained the possibility of signing there. "I knew the defense and knew what I would get, and there was also Mike Singletary [as assistant head coach/defense]," Thomas said yesterday. "So, I had an idea of how I would be used and what the system is all about. That was one of the things for me, knowing familiar faces, because you often see players following coaches around the league because they know the system. That could have been the case there." In the end, though, Thomas chose New England despite the 49ers' willingness to offer more money.

Reggie Bush has been one of the most productive running backs in the NFL during the first three weeks of 2008, and because of injuries to Marques Colston and Jeremy Shockey, the 49ers will pay special attention to the versatile back. "I think it's important right now to find out where he is on every play," Coach Mike Nolan said. "Everybody has to know where he is at all times because he does line up in the backfield, he lines up strong side, weak side, and he's very active in the offense."

San Francisco running back Frank Gore wants to win the NFL's rushing title this season, according to Mercury News. Gore fell short of his goal to break Eric Dickerson's single-season NFL rushing record of 2,105 yards in 2007, but on Monday said he wanted the 49ers' all-time rushing record, the NFL rushing title, and the league lead in total yardage. "When I talk to Coach Martz, I tell him that, 'Coach, I want to be all I got.' I even asked him if he can help me be the best back in this league," Gore said.

The 49ers impressively defeated the Lions by a final score of 31-13 on Sunday at Candlestick Park. The face of quarterback J.T. Houshmandzadeh benefited from Palmer?s good decision-making, catching twelve passes for 146 yards and a score. Chris Perry ran twenty times for 74 yards and a touchdown of his own. Michael Bush and Darren McFadden tallied 97 rushing yards, but the Oakland defense couldn?t keep the Bills from lighting up the scoreboard in the final period. Lynch scored a 3-yard touchdown to end a 96-yard drive (8:55 minutes), and then after Russell connected with Johnnie Lee Higgins on an 84-yard pass, Roscoe Parrish found the end zone to bring the Bills to within two points. Dwayne Bowe had four catches for 43 yards and a touchdown, but Larry Johnson was the only real offensive star for Kansas City in the loss. Johnson had 121 yards and a touchdown, including a 48-yard run that helped put the Chiefs in great field position in the third quarter.
