Chargers Were Prepared To Select Tua Tagovailoa At No. 6

Apr 28, 2020 3:03 PM

The Los Angeles Chargers were prepared to select Tua Tagovailoa if Justin Herbert was already off the board.

"Yeah, we felt great about both guys," Tom Telesco said. "Well, actually, we felt great about all three quarterbacks that went in the top six. All three are going to be really good players in this league, and it's a comforting factor to know. We hope we don't pick sixth very often. If we do, I won't be making very many picks here. (So) in a pick this high, if there's a potential down-the-road franchise quarterback there that you like, you have to take him."

The Chargers decided not to trade up because of how close they had the quarterbacks on their board.

Tyrod Taylor In Lead, But Chargers Will Have Competition At QB

Apr 27, 2020 11:46 AM

Anthony Lynn says Tyrod Taylor is in the driver's seat when it comes to the starting quarterback job, but the Los Angeles Chargers will hold a competition at the position.

L.A. used the sixth overall pick on Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert last week.

"We're going into this thing: Day 1, Tyrod Taylor's going to be starting it off," Lynn said. "He's earned that right. His teammates respect the hell out of him, he's a leader on this football team. Our young quarterback's gonna learn a lot from Tyrod Taylor. Tyrod Taylor's one of the most respected players on our team, and he doesn't say a whole lot either. . . . [But] it's a competition, bro. There's a competition at every position, not just this one. I can't just say Tyrod's gonna be the starting quarterback for the whole year if this young man goes in there and wins the job."

An unusual offseason may make it harder for Herbert to start immediately as a rookie.

He reached a two-year, $16 million deal with the Broncos.

"I just thought I'd be a good fit. I played against them twice a year, so I kinda seen how they used [Phillip] Lindsay, they like to run the ball. I felt it was a great opportunity there. I felt it was a good organization," Gordon said.

"Everyone knows the Denver Broncos. Everybody knows that's a good organization. I just thought it could help boost my career and give me a fresh start."
