Rob Gronkowski: Football Was Bringing Me Down

Aug 28, 2019 12:14 PM

Rob Gronkowski described the difficult experience of deciding to retire.

"I want to be clear to my fans. I needed to recover. I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down, and I didn't like it. I was losing that joy in life," Gronkowski said.

Gronkowski is becoming an advocate for players to be allowed to use CBD products for pain relief.

Gronkowski hasn't completely ruled out staying retired. "Physically, I could play right now" but added he is not there mentally.

Aug 16, 2019 8:33 PM

Josh Gordon has been reinstated by the NFL on a conditional basis.

Gordon can rejoin the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Gordon was suspended Dec. 20 for violating the terms of his reinstatement under the league's substance abuse policy.

Roger Goodell had sole discretion on Gordon's status.

"We are all rooting for Josh to succeed, both personally and professionally," Goodell said in a statement Friday. "Everyone shares in that hope and will continue to support him to every extent possible. But as Josh acknowledged, ultimately his success is up to him."

NFL Has Become More Tolerant Of Marijuana Use

Aug 12, 2019 10:16 AM

The NFL has reportedly taken a less strict stance on recreational drugs over the past few years, which could allow a player like Josh Gordon to return to the league.

"It’s really on Josh to convince them that he is going to abide by the drug rules," writes Jay Glazer. "The NFL has changed their tune — they’re no longer trying to ban guys from the NFL for these recreational drugs, especially marijuana. They realize that a lot of them are using it for mental health and for anxiety issues. They’re not trying to be like they used to be, which was zero-tolerance; they’re trying to be more understanding these days, but this is on Josh Gordon to say, 'This is what I’ve done for my recovery, I’m clean and sober, this is how I plan on staying clean and sober, I deserve this chance.' He’s got to convince them, not the other way around."

Tom Brady: Don't Read Into Selling Of Massachusetts Home

Aug 12, 2019 10:12 AM

Tom Brady will be a free agent after this season, but the New England Patriots quarterback said Monday morning that his contract status has nothing to do with the decision to sell his Massachusetts home.

"You shouldn't read into anything. I think it takes a long time to sell a house. My house is a little bit of an expensive one, so it doesn't fly off the shelf in a couple weeks," told WEEI in Boston.

"I think I'm at a point in my life where there's a lot of considerations that go into playing. I have a very busy professional life, I have a very busy personal life. Any decision that's made has to consider everything. I'm certainly at a place - where I've been in the same place for a long time -- and I love playing for the Patriots. I have such a great relationship with Mr. Kraft, Coach Belichick and our team. We'll just worry about that when that happens. This isn't the time to worry about it."

Josh Gordon Applies For Reinstatement To NFL

Aug 7, 2019 10:39 AM

Josh Gordon has officially filed for reinstatement to the NFL.

Roger Goodell has the sole discretion to make a decision on Gordon's status and timing. The decision will be based on whether Gordon has adhered to his treatment plan.

Gordon was suspended Dec. 20 for violating the terms of his reinstatement under the league's substance abuse policy.

"Once he gets on the right track, we'll get to that place," Goodell said in March. "But I think right now, he has had a complete focus on 'I have to get myself all cleared in the right place before I can get back on the field.'"

Gordon signed his restricted free-agent tender in April with the New England Patriots.

Tom Brady's New Deal Allows Him To Become Free Agent In 2020

Aug 5, 2019 8:32 PM

Tom Brady will be a free agent in 2020 despite signing a two-year extension.

Brady's new salary for 2019 is $23 million, but his contract includes two seasons that automatically void on the final day of the 2019 league calendar.

The deal also includes a provision that does not allow the New England Patriots to franchise or transition tag him for the 2020 season.

"Someone can call Tom Brady at 4:01 at the start of the league year in 2020 and try to sign Tom Brady," Ian Rapoport said Monday on NFL Network's Inside Training Camp Live. "All of this is factually correct. I will also add that the relationship between Brady and the Patriots is very good and the Patriots want to do everything they can to make sure that he plays well with them. But still, Tom Brady will be, if for just one second, a free agent after this season."

Brady said Monday that his new contract simply underscores that reality that every player in the NFL is on a year-to-year prospect.

"It's really the reality for most guys in the NFL, I don't want to think I'm any different than anyone else," Brady said. "Football is a tough business. It's a production business. I'm ready to go this year, and that's really what matters, and that's where my focus is. It's a unique situation I'm in -- 20th year with the same team and 42 years old. Pretty much unchartered territory for everybody and I'm going to go out there and be the best I can this year and see what happens."

Tom Brady Signs Two-Year Extension With Patriots

Aug 5, 2019 10:14 AM

The New England Patriots have agreed to a two-year extension with Tom Brady.

Brady will make $23 million in 2019 instead of the $15 million he was previously scheduled to earn.

Brady will be just the sixth highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

When asked about the possibility of an extension on Wednesday, Brady brushed off the notion that he deserved one.

"I appreciate this team and the opportunity it gave me in 2000," Brady said. "I play for a great coach in Coach [Bill] Belichick, and [offensive coordinator] Josh [McDaniels] and I have a great working relationship. I love Mr. [Robert] Kraft and his family. We've had just incredible success. Hopefully we can keep it going."
