Patrick Mahomes Takes Note Of No. 4 Rank In NFL Top 100

Jul 31, 2020 9:17 AM

Patrick Mahomes has taken note of his No. 4 ranking on The NFL Network's Top 100 players of 2020.

Lamar Jackson, the reigning NFL MVP, took the top spot. Mahomes also ranked behind Russell Wilson and Aaron Donald.

Shortly after the results were revealed, Mahomes tweeted an emoji that shows a pencil writing on paper, which appears to be his way of saying he's taking note.

Mahomes recently signed the richest-valued contract in American professional sports.

The 24-year-old was the MVP of the Kansas City Chiefs' 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, making him the first quarterback in NFL history to win a league MVP and Super Bowl before turning 25.

Damien Williams Opts Out Of 2020 Season

Jul 29, 2020 5:15 PM

Damien Williams has opted out of playing in the 2020 season.

Williams finished 2019 with 711 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns in the regular season. Williams also had a pair of touchdowns for the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super bowl.

“As an organization, we certainly understand and respect Damien’s choice, knowing it was made in the best interest of his family,” Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said in a statement. “He means a lot to our football team as a player and a person, and we’re going to miss having him around this season.”

The Chiefs used a first round pick in 2020 on Clyde Edwards-Helaire at running back. Darwin Thompson and Darrell Williams are also options for the Chiefs.

Tyreek Hill Predicts Chiefs Will Win Seven Super Bowls

Jul 24, 2020 9:39 AM

Tyreek Hill sees a lot of success in the future for the Kansas City Chiefs.

After teammate Chris Jones predicted five titles for the team earlier this week, Hill went on ESPN's First Take and said he believes the Chiefs will win seven Super Bowls.

"Well, I'm not gonna say he's telling a fib," Hill said when asked about Jones' comments. "But Chris Jones, he's definitely -- he's definitely a man of his word, and we're definitely creating something special here in KC, so I don't see why not. Why say five? Why not go seven rings? Right now we're just chasing [Michael] Jordan, so that's what we do. So I'm going over five, and I'm saying seven."

Only two NFL franchises have won six Super Bowls -- the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chris Jones Promises 'Five-Plus' Rings For Chiefs

Jul 21, 2020 9:08 AM

During a local radio appearance, Chris Jones made a bold prediction for the Kansas City Chiefs.

"This is only the beginning," Jones said of the reigning champions. "We plan to have another parade and another parade and another parade. We're going to make sure we bring not one, not two, not three, not four, but five-plus rings to Kansas City. It's been 50 years of waiting, but the wait is over now. It's time to create a dynasty."

Last week, the Chiefs gave Jones a four-year contract worth $85 million -- $60 million of that is reportedly guaranteed.

Lamar Jackson On Mahomes' Deal: 'I've Got To Get Where He's At'

Jul 14, 2020 9:45 AM

Lamar Jackson saw Patrick Mahomes land a deal worth nearly $500 million with the Kansas City Chiefs and has set his sights on a similar deal for himself.

Jackson and Mahomes have won the last two NFL MVP awards.

"I've got to win me a Super Bowl. I've got to get where he's at," the Baltimore Ravens quarterback said.

Asked about Mahomes' new contract, Jackson noted it's "a crazy number," but added, "he deserves it though."

Agent: Patrick Mahomes' Deal Was Horrendous For All Players

Jul 13, 2020 11:19 AM

Patrick Mahomes signed a record breaking contract with the Kansas City Chiefs that shocked people in terms of numbers ($450 million) and years (10), but it has been widely panned by agents.

“Love the total numbers," said one agent. "Hate the structure. In order for the NFL player compensation to shift closer to MLB and NBA, it will take the players with real leverage to change the dynamic. No one has greater leverage than (Mahomes). His agents missed a big opportunity to change the game. It’s a big miss.”

Another agent believed it will adversely impact other players.

“Deal was horrendous for all players moving forward," said the agent. "The kid essentially gave up free agency for his entire career. There are good but not star players who will make more over the first three years of their deals than Patrick fucking Mahomes will make over his first three years (at $63 million). How does Mr. MVP and a (Super Bowl)-winning QB do worse?! And only 13 percent guaranteed. Absolute joke. Worst deal done in the NFL in the last 20 years.”

A third agent spoke more favorably of the deal, comparing it to what Tom Brady did with the Patriots.

“I look at the contract similar to what Tom Brady did for years. Take below market value to win. Think it shows commitment to the organization. Will be great for free agents in KC.”

Andy Reid Isn't Close To Retirement

Jul 8, 2020 9:24 AM

Andy Reid, 62, won't consider retirement anytime soon.

Patrick Mahomes is now under contract with the Kansas City Chiefs for the next 12 years, a stretch that would take the coach into his 70s.

"Listen, I haven't got to that point mentally where I'm thinking about retirement," Reid said. "One of the great things about this job is when you look forward to coming to work and to deal with the players and coaches. I'm lucky enough to be around good players and coaches. This guy here [Mahomes], makes it even better. He has a unique ability with what he does with his teammates. The Honey Badger [Tyrann Mathieu] was part of this too. ... Both of those two guys make our jobs very enjoyable. I come to work and have two great leaders like that, along with other players who love to play the game. Listen, if it takes me into my 70s, then let's roll. Herbie [Teope], doggone it, I'm ready to go."

Reid would be 74 years old at the end of Mahomes' contract.

Leigh Steinberg May Have Feared Losing Mahomes By Waiting On Deal

Jul 7, 2020 1:35 PM

Multiple NFL insiders have concerns about the quality of Patrick Mahomes' deal and speculate that agent Leigh Steinberg feared waiting could have resulted in Mahomes eventually hiring someone else to do the deal.

Dak Prescott (represented by CAA) and Deshaun Watson (represented by Athletes First) are the two quarterbacks most likely to next sign major contracts.

If Mahomes took a year-by-year approach, he would have likely earned $150.96 million over the next five years compared to $141.48 million over the first five seasons of his 12-year contract.

The contract has $140 million in injury guarantees, but that only applies to career-ending injuries. Mahomes could have taken out an insurance policy for less than that difference.

The market will certainly be higher five years from now, but he will already be committed to the Chiefs for seven more seasons.
