Chiefs Sign Andy Reid, Brett Veach To Extensions Through 2025

Aug 31, 2020 9:22 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach to contract extensions through 2025.

Reid and Veach joined the Chiefs in 2013, with Veach starting as a scout. He was promoted to GM in 2017.

The Chiefs have made the playoffs in six of seven seasons with Reid and Veach, the past four as AFC West champions.

Reid recently said he has no plans to retire.

"One of the great things about this job is when you look forward to coming to work and to deal with the players and coaches," Reid said. "I'm lucky enough to be around good players and coaches. [Patrick Mahomes] makes it even better. He has a unique ability with what he does with his teammates. The 'Honey Badger' [Tyrann Mathieu] was part of this, too.

"Both of those two guys make our jobs very enjoyable. I come to work and have two great leaders like that, along with other players who love to play the game. Listen, if it takes me into my 70s, then let's roll."

NFL's 32 Teams Collectively Worth $99 Billion

Aug 26, 2020 1:29 PM

The average NFL franchise is worth more than $3 billion, according to data compiled by Sportico.

The Dallas Cowboys rank first in the NFL at $6.43 billion with the Cincinnati Bengals ranking last at $2.12 billion.

The fair-market value of the NFL's 32 franchises collectively is $99 billion when considering team-related businesses and real estate held by owners.

The teams’ $15.83 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year, which represents the 2019 season, was greater than that of 298 companies on the Fortune 500. That averages to about $495 million per team.

In 2019, the Cowboys generated an estimated $871 million in revenue, which was 81% greater than the average of the other 31 teams.

Chiefs Ban Native American Headdresses, Face Paint

Aug 21, 2020 9:32 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs have put new policies in place for fans during games at Arrowhead Stadium with regard to Native American imagery.

Fans are prohibited from wearing headdresses into the stadium. Face painting that is styled in a way as to imitate Native American cultures and traditions is also now prohibited.

The Chiefs will also look into making changes to two favorite Arrowhead traditions among their fans: the Arrowhead Chop and the pregame beating of a drum.

"In 2014, we began a dialogue with a group of local leaders from diverse American Indian backgrounds and experiences,'' the Chiefs said in a statement. "As an organization, our goal was to gain a better understanding of the issues facing American Indian communities in our region and explore opportunities to both raise awareness of American Indian cultures and celebrate the rich traditions of tribes with a historic connection to the Kansas City area.

"We are grateful for the meaningful conversations we have had with all of these American Indian leaders. It is important that we continue the dialogue on these significant topics, and we look forward to continuing to work together in the future.''

Sammy Watkins OK With Less Money To Win With Chiefs

Aug 10, 2020 10:16 AM

Sammy Watkins wants to remain with the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Very important to stay," Watkins said. "For what we did in winning the Super Bowl and the type of team and coaches we have, the organization, why wouldn't I stay? I'm a guy that's been in the league going on seven years, and I've been on teams that were not so good and were not winning.

"We've got a well-established quarterback, a well-established team, coaches, organization. The real fun is in the winning more than anything."

The wide receiver agreed to a restructured deal that will pay him $9 million, down from an original $14 million.

"I think I've made enough money," Watkins said. "I'd love more money, but as far as being smart and [staying] on this team, knowing you've got to pay Pat [Mahomes], you've got to pay Chris [Jones], there's a lot of guys you've got to pay. So for me to take a contract like I did was a blessing. ... This is my happy place, so why not take a smaller contract and come out and play with the guys I've been playing with?"
