Sammy Watkins Might Sit Out 2020 Season To 'Chill Out'

Feb 1, 2020 11:24 AM

Sammy Watkins is considering a number of options for his future, including sitting out the 2020 season.

"If it suits me and my family and [meets] my needs, for sure," Watkins said Thursday when asked about possibly renegotiating his contract as the Kansas City Chiefs. "But I'm really in a different space right now. I don't know what I'm going to do. If we win it, I might chill out. I might sit out a year. You just never know.

"Not retiring, but I might just want to rest up and chill. I don't know. I don't want to say I'm going to do something, but you never know. I might want to go somewhere else and create another Super Bowl team. So it's just all about how I'm feeling. I've got to sit down with my family, my parents and grandparents and everybody and just see what I want to do."

Watkins would be entering the third and final season of his contract with the Chiefs in 2020. He is scheduled to make $14 million next season, but none of it is guaranteed.

Chiefs, 49ers Were NFL's Fastest Teams In 2019

Jan 30, 2020 11:36 AM

The Kansas Chiefs were the NFL’s fastest team this season with ball carriers averaging a top speed of 13.34 mph, according to NextGen Stats compiled by SportRadar.

The San Francisco 49ers were right behind them at 13.32 mph.

“If we do line up for a relay, they’d probably win,” Niners safety Jimmie Ward. “But one thing about it, this is football. There’s such a thing as a helmet and shoulder pads. And we hit. We are very physical with how we hit.”

Tyreek Hill and Raheem Mostert are the fastest players on their respective teams.

Patrick Mahomes Wants To Spend Entire Career With Chiefs

Jan 30, 2020 11:36 AM

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will negotiate a contract extension over the next year and he is on record as wanting to remain with the franchise for his entire career.

“The people are what really drew me to Kansas City, and I hope I get to play there the rest of my career,” Mahomes said. “The people and how they accept you, how they care about you more as a person than as a player, how much passion they have for the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s somewhere where I want to be for the rest of my career.”

Mahomes won MVP in his first season as starting quarterback and led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl in his second season. Mahomes spent his rookie season backing up Alex Smith.

Extension For Patrick Mahomes May Be Year Away

Jan 29, 2020 11:50 AM

Clark Hunt says the Kansas City Chiefs may wait until next year to sign Patrick Mahomes to a new contract.

"There will be a right time sometime in the next 12 to 15 months to extend Patrick, and when I say right time, I mean right time for both the player and the club," the team's chairman said.

"I don't want to say necessarily it has to be this offseason, but I will say that it's a priority to get him done.

"I hope Patrick is here for his entire career, and that's going to be our goal."

Mahomes, a first-round pick in 2017, is eligible for a contract extension now that he's finished his third season.

'Record-Breaking Demand' For Super Bowl LIV Tickets

Jan 21, 2020 10:45 AM

The average ticket sold since the 49ers-Chiefs showdown was set for Miami on Feb. 2 is a whopping $6,785, according to the ticket platform SeatGeek.

The current get-in price is approximately $5,500.

“In general, it’s record-breaking demand,” SeatGeek communications manager Chris Leyden said in a phone interview. “It seems like the market is about 20 percent hotter than we anticipated.”

Leyden believes the Super Bowl droughts of the 49ers and Chiefs have contributed to the demand. The 49ers have only been to one Super Bowl since they won in 1995, while the Chiefs haven't reached a Super Bowl in 50 years.

Hard Rock Stadium is also one of the smaller NFL stadiums with a capacity of 65,326.

“On a personal level, it was kind of surprising how much demand there is,” Leyden said. “Right now, it’s looking like a 50/50 split between the two fan bases.”

The Chiefs defeated the Titans by a final score of 35-24 with Patrick Mahomes throwing for 294 yards with three touchdowns and another 53 yards rushing and a touchdown. Mahomes' performance was highlighted by a 27-yard touchdown run to close out the second quarter and give Kansas City a 21-17 lead heading into halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Chiefs scored two unanswered touchdowns to open the fourth quarter and put the game away.

In the NFC Championship, the 49ers used a dominant running game to defeat the Green Bay Packers by a final score of 37-20. Raheem Mostert had 220 yards on 29 carries and four touchdowns.

The 49ers had a 27-0 lead heading into halftime and it took a pair of Green Bay touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score closer than the game felt.

The Chiefs are -1.5 point favorites to win the Super Bowl over San Francisco.
