The Kansas City Chiefs have opened extension talks with Patrick Mahomes.

The deal is expected to be the first in NFL history with compensation tied to the salary cap.

Other players have tried to negotiate a deal tied to the cap but have been unsuccessful. By tying salary to the cap, Mahomes would ensure he remains amongst the NFL's most well compensated players.

Mahomes' rookie contract won't expire until after the 2021 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs plan on opening contract extension talks with Patrick Mahomes this summer.

“The negotiations are something we’ll be getting into this summer,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said on a Facebook Live event with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “But what he has said and what we’ve said, both sides, is he wants to be a Kansas City Chief for life, and that’s our mentality as well. We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that’s what we’re going to be shooting for.”

Mahomes is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal, set to count $5.3 million against the salary cap with an $825,000 base salary.

Mahomes will almost certainly become the NFL's highest paid player when his contract is finalized. 

The Kansas City Chiefs will open the NFL season on Thursday, September 10th against the Houston Texans.

The Chiefs defeated the Texans 51-31 in the Divisional Round of the 2019 playoffs after trailing 24-0.

The Chiefs went on to win the Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL picked the Texans for opening night for the Chiefs over the Broncos, Chargers, Raiders, Patriots, Jets, Falcons and Panthers. Kansas City will play at the Saints in a potential Super Bowl preview.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a developmental quarterback in Shea Patterson of Michigan.

Patterson was signed as an undrafted rookie.

The Chiefs also recently signed Jordan Ta'amu, who played with the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL.

Chad Henne is under contract to presumably serve as the No. 2 to Patrick Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes is confident he will eventually sign a long-term contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

"I want to be a Chief for a long time," Mahomes said Friday. "I want to have a contract that says that and then I can go out there and know I have that security and everything like that. I understand and trust the Chiefs' organization and everybody in it will handle it the right way. I trust my representation that they're going to ease my mind and let me go out there and just love the game that I've loved playing.

"Whenever it happens, it happens."

The Chiefs have sent mixed signals recently regarding their urgency to do a contract extension for Mahomes.
