Mike McCarthy: Jerry Jones Wants Me Here As Long As Tom Landry

Jan 27, 2023 8:47 AM

Mike McCarthy appears safe as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys after back-to-back 12-5 seasons.

There was speculation about McCarthy's status after the Cowboys' playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

"As far as my relationship with Jerry ... we are in an excellent spot. The partnership that we have, he's excited about," McCarthy said. "He told me a number of times this week that he wants me to coach here as long as coach (Tom) Landry did. I said, 'OK, that's a long time.' I feel really good about our relationship. I think our ability to discuss and disagree, we do a good job at that. I think that's important."

Landry coached the Cowboys for 29 years. McCarthy, 59, would have to lead the team until age 85 to match Landry's run.

Cowboys Fire Five Assistant Coaches

Jan 26, 2023 8:35 AM

The Dallas Cowboys have cut ties with a number of assistant coaches in the wake of Sunday's playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Gone are senior defensive assistant George Edwards, running backs coach Skip Peete, offensive line coach Joe Philbin, assistant defensive line coach Leon Lett and assistant head coach Rob Davis.

The contracts had expired for all but four members of Mike McCarthy's staff. But it's still a firing, as a practical matter, to not offer them new contracts.

Jerry Jones Did Not Conduct Interview With Flagship Station This Week

Jan 25, 2023 8:08 AM

Jerry Jones did not make a Tuesday appearance on 105.3 The Fan, a day after his son, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president, Stephen Jones skipped a Monday appearance.

Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones both have two appearances on the team's flagship station every week during the season. Jerry appears on Tuesdays and Fridays and Stephen on Mondays and Fridays.

The Cowboys are conducting exit interviews this week, which could explain Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones' radio silence.

Ezekiel Elliott Wants To Be With Cowboys: 'Can't Predict The Future'

Jan 24, 2023 8:52 AM

Ezekiel Elliott has made it clear that he wants to remain with the Dallas Cowboys.

"I've definitely thought about it," the running back said after the Cowboys' playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. "I want to be here. I don't have a crystal ball. Can't predict the future, but definitely want to be here."

Elliott is due a $10.9 million base salary in 2023, which comes with a $16.72 million cap hit. If the Cowboys cut him before June 1 it would come with an $11.86 million dead-money hit while saving $4.86 million.

A post-June 1 designation would leave $5.82 million on the 2023 salary cap with $10.9 million in short-term savings.

Tony Pollard Has Broken Leg, Needs Surgery

Jan 23, 2023 9:57 AM

Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard suffered a fractured left fibula Sunday that will require surgery, according to sources.

Pollard suffered the injury with 1:24 left in the first half of the Cowboys' 19-12 divisional round loss to the San Francisco 49ers when he was rolled up after an 8-yard catch.

Pollard needed help to the sideline and was wearing an Aircast on his left leg as he was carted to the X-ray room inside Levi's Stadium.

He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in March and had the best season of his career. In 16 regular-season games, Pollard had 1,007 yards on 193 carries. He scored 12 touchdowns this season, surpassing the total he had in his first three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.
