Josh Gordon Exits Rehab Facility, Hopes To Resume NFL Career

Oct 30, 2016 4:32 PM

Josh Gordon has been released from his rehab facility in New Hampshire where he spent the past 30 days.

It is said to be the most intensive treatment that he has gone through, and Gordon is doing "a lot better," one source said.

Gordon is now waiting for the NFL to determine whether he can rejoin the Cleveland Browns. For the time being, Gordon remains suspended, and it's unclear whether the league plans to reinstate him.

The Browns have moved on from Gordon and are looking to trade him.

Goodell: NFL Has Made 'Tremendous Progress' On Domestic Violence

Oct 27, 2016 10:47 AM

Roger Goodell believes the NFL is moving in the right direction on handling issues of domestic violence despite significant public criticism on the Josh Brown case.

“What you see here is a policy that’s evolved,” Goodell told Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. “We’ve learned a lot, but these are complex matters. When you talk to the domestic violence experts, these are difficult matters to deal with. You have rights, you have families that you have to be concerned with, privacy issues. Yes, you want to make sure you’re doing everything possible to address these [alleged incidents] when they happen, but you also want to deal with them to prevent them from happening. I think we’ve made tremendous progress. Can we make more and will we make more? Of course.”

Goodell said Brown’s one-game suspension at the start of the season was solely for one incident that the NFL had information about.

“Here’s the issue, the discipline that occurred on the one game was for the event on May of 2015,” Goodell said. “That was the only one that we were able to get of all the different things that we’ve heard. The decision was made by our team after we had the evidence to be able to support the one game. We knew we would get challenged [by the NFL Players Association] and we were able to uphold it.”

Giants Release Josh Brown

Oct 27, 2016 8:03 AM

The New York Giants have released Josh Brown.

The team said that it was "misguided" in its previous attitude toward Brown, who acknowledged he was physically, verbally and emotionally abusive against his wife Molly Brown.

"We believed we did the right thing at every juncture in our relationship with Josh," team president John Mara said in a statement. "Our beliefs, our judgments and our decisions were misguided. We accept that responsibility.

"We hope that Josh will continue to dedicate himself to rehabilitation and to becoming a better person and father. We will continue to support him in his efforts to continue counseling, and we hope that Josh and his family can find peace and a positive resolution."

Brown had released a statement earlier Tuesday, apologizing and saying he has "taken measures to get help" for his alleged domestic abuse and wants to be a "voice of change, not a statistic."

Roger Goodell Suggests Public Has 'Misunderstanding' On NFL Punishment

Oct 24, 2016 7:37 AM

Roger Goodell was asked by the BBC about the disparity between the punishments of Josh Brown and Tom Brady and suggested that the "public's misunderstanding" was to blame.

"The criticism that comes back to you is that people see punishments for touchdown celebrations but then only one game for a domestic violence incident. It must be very difficult to balance those things and explain them?" asked Richard Conway.

"They are," said Goodell. "I understand the public's misunderstanding of those things and how that can be difficult for them to understand how we get to those positions. But those are things that we have to do. I think it's a lot deeper and a lot more complicated than it appears but it gets a lot of focus."

Goodell tried to stress how off-field information isn't always fully available to the NFL.

"The issue that you want is ... that's why we'd like to speak to the people involved whether it's the victim or the people involved that may have information, including law enforcement," said Goodell. "But we understand that in certain cases they may not be permitted to talk to us or want to talk to us and we don't make judgments on people where they do that. What we want to do is get the facts and when we get the facts, we're going to aggressively pursue that, and we'll apply our policy."

Josh Brown Placed On Exempt List

Oct 22, 2016 10:00 PM

Josh Brown has been placed on the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt List.

The NFL is reopening their investigation on Brown for repeated domestic violence issues. Brown was previously suspended for just one game.

Brown will still collect his $1.15 million salary and has the option to appeal the decision.

The New York Giants have supported Brown, receiving widespread criticism.

"We did some of our own investigation," Giants co-owner and president John Mara said on Thursday. "Most of the investigation was done by the NFL. They made the determination to suspend him for one game. Obviously, the law enforcement made the decision not to prosecute him, so based on the information we had at the time, as I said at the time, we were comfortable with our decision. Obviously, there's been some new information that has come to light over the last day. We don't have all of that information yet but based on what we did have, we felt the best course of action was to make Josh inactive for this game and we'll see what the future brings."

Giants Could Use Beckham As Emergency Kicker As Brown Stays Home

Oct 20, 2016 7:57 PM

Josh Brown will not travel with the New York Giants to London for their Week 7 game against the Rams.

The Giants said they will review newly released documents in which Brown admitted to domestic abuse and "revisit" the issue when the team returns from London. The NFL also announced that it will review the documents.

In an interview with WFAN Radio in New York, Giants co-owner John Mara said the "best course" was to make Brown inactive this week and that the team hasn't made a decision on his future.

Mara said Brown "admitted to us he'd abused his wife in the past. What's a little unclear is the extent of that."

Ben McAdoo told WFAN that the Giants will "kick the tires" on players and sign one to kick in Sunday's game. Asked if any player on the team was an emergency kicker, McAdoo mentioned Odell Beckham Jr., but later said he doesn't expect to use his star wide receiver "in that role."

The NFL had only previously suspended Brown for one game.

The Giants re-signed him to a two-year, $4 million deal this offseason. Mara said in August the Giants were comfortable re-signing Brown after reviewing all the information at their disposal.

McAdoo also said in August that he supported Brown "as a man, a father and a player."

There has been strong public outcry from fans and even certain players for the Giants to release Brown.

NFL Upholds 10-Game Suspension For Lane Johnson

Oct 11, 2016 1:43 PM

The NFL on Tuesday upheld the 10-game suspension for Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy for a second time.

"We're very disappointed that Lane Johnson has been suspended 10 games. His actions have affected the entire organization," Eagles vice president Howie Roseman said in a statement. "We are all working under a clearly-defined set of rules and regulations set forth by the NFL in the collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA.

"Moving forward, he has no choice but to hold himself accountable to Jeffrey Lurie, Coach [Doug] Pederson and his staff, his teammates, and to the entire organization and our fans. When he returns from suspension, we will continue to support him and welcome him back to the team. We are moving on with our preparations for this week's game in Washington."

Johnny Manziel is now free to sign with any NFL team as his four-game suspension has ended.

NFL Bans Synthetic Marijuana

Oct 5, 2016 2:09 PM

The NFL has added synthetic marijuana to the list of banned substances within its 2016 drug policy, according to a joint announcement Wednesday from the league and the NFL Players Association.

Any player whose drug test reveals more than 2.5 ng/ML of synthetic cannabinoids will be in violation and subject to the normal course of intervention and potential discipline. It is one of nine drugs, including cocaine, PCP and traditional marijuana, that are part of the NFL's standard drug testing panel. The policy is developed jointly by the league and the NFL Players Association.

The NFL has experienced at least one high-profile incident related to synthetic marijuana. In January, then-New England Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones behaved bizarrely, reportedly after using the drug. Police records obtained by ESPN showed he arrived at a Foxborough, Massachusetts, police station seeking help for a bad reaction. He was soon transported to a local hospital but returned to work at the Patriots' facility the next day.

Jones was traded to the Arizona Cardinals during the offseason.
