Ndamukong Suh Has Suspension Overturned

Dec 30, 2014 6:51 PM

Ndamukong Suh had his one-game suspension overturned by appeals officer Ted Cottrell on Tuesday, a day after the NFL suspended Suh for Sunday's playoff game between the Lions and Dallas Cowboys.

Instead, Cottrell ruled Suh will have to pay a $70,000 fine.

Suh was suspended by the league for stepping on the calf and ankle of Aaron Rodgers during the Packers' 30-20 win over the Lions on Sunday.

Ndamukong Suh Suspended For Game Against Cowboys

Dec 30, 2014 10:37 AM

Ndamukong Suh has been suspended for the Detroit Lions' playoff game at the Dallas Cowboys for stepping on Aaron Rodgers' leg twice, once with each foot.

Suh also applied pressure and pushed off Rodgers' unprotected leg with his left foot, violating unnecessary roughness rules, the league said in a statement.

Suh, who will be reinstated next Monday, can appeal the suspension within three days. He can ask for an expedited appeal, which would be heard by Ted Cottrell, a hearing officer employed by the NFL and the players' union. No hearing is scheduled, but one could happen as soon as Tuesday.

Josh Gordon Suspended By Browns For Week 17

Dec 27, 2014 6:02 PM

Josh Gordon has been suspended by the Cleveland Browns for an unspecified violation of team rules.

The Browns announced the suspension in a release Saturday. Wide receiver Phil Bates has been promoted from the practice squad to replace Gordon on the active roster.

Both Gordon and Johnny Manziel were absent from the Browns' walk-through Saturday morning, and the team had trouble locating them, a source close to the team told ESPN's Pat McManamon.

Gordon also was late getting onto the practice field Friday and emerged from the team's facility for the outdoor workout wearing teammate Travis Benjamin's jersey.

By being active for only five games, Gordon fell one game short of the requirement for an accredited season, meaning he will be a restricted free agent -- instead of an unrestricted free agent -- following the 2015 season.

Aldon Smith Denies Report Of Drinking Alcohol

Dec 23, 2014 5:22 PM

Aldon Smith has denied drinking with Ray McDonald and a woman who alleges she was assaulted by McDonald last week.

"As far as it's concerned, I was over at Ray's house for close to an hour. I didn't drink one thing," Smith told reporters during locker room access Tuesday afternoon. "As far as it goes, relating to that, I have nothing else to say.

According to court documents unsealed Monday that were written by San Jose police investigators to obtain a search warrant for McDonald's home, the woman told authorities she has no memory of the sexual encounter that occurred in McDonald's San Jose house, which police say occurred Dec. 14 a few hours after the 49ers returned from a 17-7 loss to the Seahawks in Seattle.

The woman stayed with McDonald at his home the next day and drank vodka with McDonald and Smith, according to the papers.

Doug Hendrickson, Smith's agent, told The San Jose Mercury News that his client didn't drink at McDonald's home.

"He's been in the (NFL's) alcohol program and gets tested twice a week, and he's never failed a test," Hendrickson told the newspaper.

Smith was sentenced to three years' probation in that case and isn't allowed to drink alcohol, per terms of the agreement. Smith said before the season that he is sober.

The probation was handed down in July after he pleaded no contest to weapons and DUI charges and reportedly included his not drinking alcohol.

NFLPA Files Suit Against NFL In Adrian Peterson Case

Dec 16, 2014 9:34 AM

The NFL Players Association has filed a lawsuit against the NFL in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, challenging an arbitrator's decision made Friday to uphold Adrian Peterson's suspension by the league.

The lawsuit comes as ABC News has obtained a recording of the Nov. 12 phone call between Troy Vincent and Peterson in which the NFL executive tells him that he would be reinstated after a two-game suspension and get credit for his time on the commissioner's exempt list.

Vincent made the promise with the additional request that Peterson attend a Nov. 14 meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss the child abuse case in which he pleaded no contest in Texas to misdemeanor reckless assault for physically disciplining his 4-year-old son with a wooden switch. Peterson declined to attend the meeting, however, citing uncertainty about the NFL's intent to question him, and the league issued a six-game suspension to the running back on Nov. 18.

Adrian Peterson Considering Retirement

Dec 14, 2014 7:29 PM

Adrian Peterson has been so disappointed by the NFL's disciplinary process that he's considering retirement.

In a 60-minute phone interview with ESPN, Peterson said he plans to file a lawsuit against the league, adding he wasn't sure if he could trust the NFL's process for reinstatement. If a lawsuit would eventually put the 2012 NFL MVP's chance for reinstatement at risk, Peterson said he would consider walking away from the game altogether.

"I've considered retiring from the NFL," Peterson said. "I still made $8 million dollars this year. I've thought about getting back into the real estate (business in Texas) I'm already in. That's something I've been interested in, something I'm involved in. I've thought about getting back into that. I've thought about going after the Olympics -- you only live once. It might be time for me to pursue that, as well. I love playing football, don't get me wrong, but this situation is deeper than that. For me, it's like, 'Why should I continue to be a part of an organization or a business that handles players the way they do? Making money off the field anyway, why not continue to pursue that (Olympic) dream and pursue other dreams and hang up the cleats?'"
