NFL To Revisit Aldon Smith Reinstatement In Offseason

Dec 31, 2016 1:45 PM

The NFL will revisit Aldon Smith's possible reinstatement after March 15th.

The delay, first reported by Pro Football Talk, came after Smith applied for reinstatement following a one-year suspension for violating NFL rules on substance abuse.

Smith's yearlong suspension was due to end Nov. 17, and he applied for reinstatement Oct. 3.

"A little disappointed, honestly," Jack Del Rio said of the decision. "I feel like from everything that I've gathered, obviously it's not my job to make a rule, but from everything I've gathered, he's done his duty to take care of all the things he needs to take care of. I see some of the guys that have been allowed back. My question is, What's the difference? It's always a question mark. If a guy has a chance, he should have a chance to make a living. I don't really agree with what's gone down, but it's not my job. We'll move on as a team. That's what we have to do, but I'm a little disappointed."

Doug Martin Begins Serving Four-Game Suspension For PED Violation

Dec 28, 2016 6:42 PM

Doug Martin has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and will serve a four-game suspension effective immediately.

"I was notified last week of a four-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy," Martin said in a statement. "My initial instinct was to appeal the suspension and finish the season with my teammates. However, after numerous discussions with people close to me -- including Coach (Dirk) Koetter -- I am starting the suspension immediately so I can enter a treatment facility and receive the help I truly need.

"On the field, I must be strong and determined to push through both pain and injuries to become an elite NFL running back. Off the field, I have tried that same approach in my personal life. My shortcomings in this area have taught me both that I cannot win these personal battles alone and that there is no shame in asking for help."

Martin was declared inactive for Week 16, which Koetter called a "coach's decision."

"I sincerely apologize to the Glazer family, general manager Jason Licht and the entire Tampa Bay organization, my teammates and our tremendous fans," said Martin, who wasn't at practice Wednesday. "This was not the season I envisioned and I have let everyone down, including myself. However, adversity yields opportunity and I ask for your support in my battle to overcome these personal issues."

NFL Fines Giants $150K, Ben McAdoo $50K For Walkie Use

Dec 20, 2016 6:11 PM

The NFL fined the New York Giants $150,000 and coach Ben McAdoo $50,000 for the illegal use of walkie-talkies during their Week 14 10-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, the league announced Tuesday.

In addition, the Giants' fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft will fall a maximum of 12 spots in the fourth round and could drop below compensatory picks, depending on the spot the team will select from.

Coaches are not allowed to hold any two-way radios during a game because they are not capable of being cut off with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock.

McAdoo was seen on the sideline holding the walkie-talkie when it was apparent the team was having trouble getting plays in to Eli Manning.
