Roger Goodell Won't Return Patriots' Draft Picks

Mar 23, 2016 3:53 PM

Roger Goodell confirmed he received a letter from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft asking for the return of the team's draft picks as part of Deflategate penalties, yet he isn't changing the discipline.

"I responded to him two weeks ago and told him that I had considered his views and I didn't think there was any new information in there that would cause us to alter the discipline," Goodell said Wednesday at the NFL's annual meeting at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. "So there will be no change to the discipline."

On Monday, Kraft told reporters that he sent the letter about a month ago.

"I personally believe that when the league made their decision, they did not factor in the Ideal Gas Law. They admitted that publicly. They had a full year of being able to observe Tom Brady play with all the rules of whatever the NFL was, and make any judgments there," Kraft said. "We have laid it out pretty straightforward. And now it's up for them to decide. ...

"They did their own testing, they have results, and for whatever reason, they haven't shared them with any of us. We actually requested at the beginning of the season that they test every game throughout the league and do that, but they chose to do it their way."

The NFL stripped the Patriots of a 2016 first-round draft choice and 2017 fourth-round draft choice.

Robert Kraft Writes Letter To Goodell Requesting Return Of Picks

Mar 21, 2016 3:52 PM

Robert Kraft wrote a letter to Roger Goodell over a month ago requesting the NFL reinstate draft picks tripped as part of the Deflategate penalties.

Kraft is not optimistic it will spark a change.

Kraft said his letter was in response to Goodell's remarks that if any new facts were learned, Goodell would reconsider the punishment of a 2016 first-round pick, 2017 fourth-round pick, the four-game suspension of Brady and a $1 million fine.

"I personally believe that when the league made their decision, they did not factor in the Ideal Gas Law. They admitted that publicly. They had a full year of being able to observe Tom Brady play with all the rules of whatever the NFL was, and make any judgments there," Kraft told reporters at the Boca Raton Resort. "We have laid it out pretty straightforward. And now it's up for them to decide."

Steelers Won't Cut Martavis Bryant

Mar 21, 2016 1:13 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have no plans on cutting Martavis Bryant.

Bryant is suspended for the 2016 season for a violation of the NFL's policy on substances of abuse.

"He has to do what he has to do from a league standpoint," Kevin Colbert said. "He has to do what he has to do from a personal standpoint. We have to prepare for what we have to do without him in 2016. After all that is taken care of, we will revisit it. As of right now, as Art Rooney II said, we support him. But in all honesty, what happens is totally up to him."

The Steelers have depth at wide receiver even without Bryant in the form of Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Sammie Coates and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

NFL, NFLPA Close To Deal To Strip Roger Goodell's Discipline Authority

Mar 14, 2016 10:24 PM

The NFL and NFLPA are working toward a deal that would strip Roger Goodell of his authority over off-the-field player discipline.

"We’ve been talking about changes to the personal conduct policy since October and have traded proposals," NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said Monday, via the Wall Street Journal.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy acknowledged the negotiations, saying it "is an important area that deserves to be addressed thoughtfully and with full consideration for everyone’s interests — players, clubs and fans."

Goodell said in September that he was willing to change his role in the league's punishment process.

Under the current system, which the NFLPA agreed to in the 2011 collective bargaining agreement, Goodell has been able to rule on player discipline and also hear appeals.

Goodell's punishments for Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and Tom Brady have been contested.

Martavis Bryant Faces Yearlong Suspension

Mar 13, 2016 5:04 PM

Martavis Bryant is facing a yearlong suspension from the NFL, his agent confirmed.

The suspension is related to NFL drug testing, a source told ESPN. Bryant's agent, Tom Santanello, confirmed Saturday that the talented receiver plans to appeal the suspension.

Another of his agents, Brian Fettner, told USA Today Sports that Bryant, who served a four-game suspension last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, is fighting depression and plans to enter rehab Sunday for evaluation.

"We're all stunned, me included," Fettner told USA Today Sports. "We clearly miscalculated the issue. His isn't a party issue. It's a coping issue and a depression issue, and he's got to take care of it.

"This is the biggest cry for help I've ever seen. And that hurts. It hurts us to see. He's 24 years old and he's got to get right, whatever it is. If you talk to anybody's family that has depression, they will be talking about these same things -- the [despondence], the withdrawal, the head-in-the-sand despair -- just trying to cope."

After returning from his four-game suspension, Bryant had a productive 2015 season for the Steelers, hauling in 50 receptions for 765 yards and six touchdowns in 11 games.
