Kyler Murray Won't Come Off PUP When Eligible

Sep 30, 2023 5:28 PM

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is not expected to come off the physically unable to perform list when he becomes eligible Monday and still is considered weeks away from playing, league sources told ESPN.

Murray has not practiced since tearing an ACL in December against the New England Patriots. The former No. 1 overall draft selection wants and plans to return this season, but he slowly is ramping up his comeback in an attempt to rejoin the Cardinals, sources told ESPN.

"It just doesn't feel like [Murray's return] is imminent," a Cardinals source said.

Von Miler Expected To Resume Practicing

Sep 30, 2023 5:26 PM

Buffalo Bills star pass-rusher Von Miller, who has not played since tearing his right ACL on Thanksgiving Day last season, is expected to resume practicing this week, sources told ESPN.

Miller is on the physically unable to perform list and will miss his fourth game to start the season Sunday when the Miami Dolphins visit the Bills, who will have a five-week period to allow the eight-time Pro Bowler to resume practicing starting Monday. Once a player who starts the season on the PUP list returns to practice, a team has three weeks to decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster.

NFL Toughens Ban For Betting On Own Team

Sep 30, 2023 5:23 PM

The NFL is modifying the league's gambling policies that will punish players more harshly for betting on their own teams while also amending rules that will allow some players, including Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams, to return to the field quicker.

Under the new policy, as disclosed in a memo from commissioner Roger Goodell that was obtained by ESPN on Friday, a player who places a bet involving his own team will be suspended at least two years. Bets placed by players on any NFL game will result in at least a one-year suspension.

Betting on non-NFL sports while at a team facility or on team-related travel will now result in a two-game suspension for a first violation, six games for a second violation and at least one year for a third.

Jared Goff: Lions Feel Like We Can Beat Anyone

Sep 29, 2023 8:54 AM

Jared Goff wasn't overly excited after the Detroit Lions' 34-20 win over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

"It's what we expect to do," Goff said. "We have a good team."

The Lions are 3-1 with wins coming at Arrowhead Stadium and Lambeau Field.

"We have that confidence," the quarterback said. "Like I said, send us anywhere. Line us up against anyone, and we feel like we can go in there and beat them, and that's a good feeling to have. Is it always gonna happen? I don't know, but we feel like we can. We have that confidence in ourselves, in our coaches and each other. We're working together really well right now."

Zach Wilson: Jets Will Try To Prove Joe Namath 'Wrong'

Sep 29, 2023 8:47 AM

Speaking for the first time since Joe Namath issued strong criticism of the New York Jets, Zach Wilson insisted that he wasn't upset by the comments.

"I mean, he's passionate," Wilson said. "He's obviously one of the greats, so as an offense we've got to do everything we can to try to prove him wrong."

Namath, 80, fed up with Wilson's struggles, blasted the quarterback on "The Michael Kay Show.". He said that Wilson's performance was "disgusting" and that he's "seen enough of Zach Wilson," predicting the former first-round pick never will develop into a good player.

Wilson was thrust into the lineup when Aaron Rodgers went down with a season-ending Achilles injury on the fourth play in Week 1.

Justin Jefferson 'Tired' Of Trade Talk For Winless Vikings

Sep 29, 2023 8:42 AM

The Minnesota Vikings are 0-3, but Justin Jefferson says there are far too many games remaining to begin drawing conclusions about the fate of the team's season.

The wide receiver said he is tired of hearing about how their start could impact plans for 2024 and whether some players will or should be traded to stockpile draft picks.

"At the end of the day it's not going to be perfect every time," Jefferson said. "There's things that you've got to go through throughout the season to really tell if you're going to be a great team or not. We're handling adversity early in the season with the turnovers and being 0-3, but there is a whole bunch of more games to go.

"I'm tired of people saying that we're looking into next season or all of the trades and stuff like that. We're focused still on this season. We have a lot more games to go and we have a lot more things to accomplish this season. We're still focused in, and we still have the same goal as we had before the season. We just need to fix a few things and I feel like we'll be back on track."

Jefferson's 458 receiving yards is an NFL record for the first three weeks of a season.

Austin Ekeler Practices, But Hasn't Pushed To '100 Percent' Yet

Sep 28, 2023 8:43 AM

Austin Ekeler returned to practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday for the first time since he suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 1.

Ekeler went through individual drills where he sprinted with the football in his hand and bounced up and down on the injured ankle throughout the portion of practice open to the media.

After practice, Ekeler told reporters that playing this Sunday is a "possibility."

"I can run full speed straight ahead right now," Ekeler said. "But if I go turn -- that's where I have been trying to build back towards."

The challenge for the running back is that making cuts or turns is still painful. Ekeler said he had never had a high ankle sprain before.

"I'm not at a point where I've gone out there and tried to push it 100% yet," he said, "That's not how the process works. You continue to build yourself back. It's kind of like climbing the stairs. You're not gonna just jump straight to the top stair and tell me, 'Oh yeah, I can make it there.' You kind of go one-by-one, 'OK, now we're progressing towards 100%.' So I haven't been there yet."
