Holmgren Insists Browns Weren't Duped By Vikings In Trade

Oct 26, 2014 4:34 AM

It has been reported that the Vikings were bluffing about multiple teams being interested in the third overall pick. Mike Holmgren is aware of the reports, but doesn't buy into them a few days after the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Cleveland wanted to get Trent Richardson, so they traded up to the third pick to ensure they wouldn't lose him to another team. "Contrary to what was written and said yesterday, we had to compete," Holmgren said. "We weren't the Lone Ranger in that deal.' ... You don't want to be up there, really, but we were up there so it was very, very important who we chose there. That's why we targeted Trent. We didn't want to lose him."

Browns Don't Expect To Trade McCoy

Jun 19, 2014 7:45 PM

The Browns do not expect to trade quarterback Colt McCoy despite drafting 28-year-old quarterback Brandon Weeden, according to a team source. Cleveland general manager Tom Heckert had said Thursday that the team was considering moving McCoy after taking Weeden. The selection of Weeden came after the Browns told McCoy on draft day that they wouldn't take a quarterback in the first round, a league source told Schefter. The Browns have denied telling McCoy that.

Weeden Wants To Follow Warner's Career Path

Jun 10, 2014 8:05 PM

Brandon Weeden wants to follow the career path of Kurt Warner, who didn't start an NFL game until he was 28 years old. Warner went on to win the NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP in 1999 and become a starter for nearly a decade. Weeden was drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft by Cleveland on Thursday night. He will be a 28-year-old rookie. "As you know, maturity, leadership, how you go about business in a locker room, I think that goes a long way - especially playing this position," Weeden told Warner on The NFL Network. "I use you as an example all the time. You had a tremendous career, won a lot of games starting at 28, all the way through your 30s and had a fantastic career. I'm not comparing myself to you - I hope to be mentioned in the same sentence as you - but longevity-wise, I think I've got a lot of football left in my tank. If I can play for eight, 10, 12 years, that's a heck of an NFL career and something I would take a lot of pride in."

The Eagles and Rams have inquired with the Browns about the fourth overall pick in this month's NFL Draft, according to league sources. The Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that there is "a decent chance" the Browns will move down in the draft. Possible targets for teams looking to move up are Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil, LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne and Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon. The Eagles and Rams both have multiple second-round picks with which they could facilitate a trade with the Browns. St. Louis earlier moved down four spots from the No. 2 pick to acquire three first-round selections as well a second rounder.
