The 2008 season is finally upon us and though there are about a dozen teams with serious Super Bowl hopes, RealGM's Jeff Risdon has outlined what we can expect from all 32 of them. We might be biased, but nobody breaks down football better than Jeff, and you can read his previews by clicking on the links below. Arizona Cardinals The Cardinals are one of those teams like the Lions and Bengals: show me, don?t tell me. We saw a lot of things to like in 2007, particularly on defense. But we also saw a lot of work still to be done, and this offseason did little to immediately improve the team. Atlanta Falcons Last season represented a perfect storm of negativity and organizational chaos, perhaps more challenging than any team has ever faced. The worst is over and greener pastures lie in the distance, but the road from this manure-filled pasture to that one isn?t short and isn?t often going to be pretty. Baltimore Ravens These Ravens won?t be an easy team to beat or a fun team to play, but they?ll be real hard-pressed to win more than they lose. A 7-9 finish will mark what might be the end of the Ray Lewis era in Baltimore. Buffalo Bills With all the returning injured players and solid line play on both sides of the ball, the Bills are good enough to hang in the playoff race. But with the gray area surrounding Jason Peters and Trent Edwards, they probably don?t have enough difference-makers in the right spots to make those playoff seeds germinate this year. Carolina Panthers So long as Delhomme is back to his old self and the defensive back seven can make plays, this team has a great chance to win the NFC South. Chicago Bears Much like their recent Chicago hoops brethren, a lot of individual talent doesn?t form a great or often even a competitive team. Cincinnati Bengals If the Bengals can rally around itself and put all the years of negativity and character issues behind them, they could be the surprise team of 2008 and taste .500. But barring a major cultural seismic event, a 4-12 record and strong contention for the top draft pick in 2009 is more likely. Cleveland Browns The Browns are clearly improved, but the non-divisional schedule is brutal, and this team still has some questions. Dallas Cowboys Once again, this is the best team in the NFC on paper, but once again the games aren?t decided on paper. The injury bug, soap opera drama, difficult schedule, and negative karma for adding Pacman Jones all conspire to derail the assumption of greatness. Denver Broncos It?s all a question of when--when does Jay Cutler make the next step, when does the young defensive core emerge into a force, when will guys like Eddie Royal and Ryan Clady become above-average starters, when will the special teams get better? Detroit Lions This team has the best chance of any Lions team this century to break through and win more than 8 games and secure a playoff berth. Of course, these are the Lions and this long-time Lions fan (my #20 Lions jersey says ?Sims? and it isn?t a throwback) knows better. Green Bay Packers Even with Brett Favre this team would have a real hard time coming close to the 13 wins of 2007. The QB situation is just one of the questions that faces this team as they look to repeat in the NFC North. I have a hunch that enough of those questions (the aging CBs, the gaping hole at DT, the running game) will not get answered positive that the Packers are going to slide out of the playoffs. Houston Texans Their faulty secondary and iffy running game is a bad combo for both holding leads and winning close games against quality opponents, but they are sneaking closer into the playoff picture. Indianapolis Colts This might be the best overall Colts' team of the Dungy era, but that doesn?t necessarily translate into the best record of that era. Jacksonville Jaguars Jacksonville is a trendy pick as a rising playoff power that could challenge the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers for AFC supremacy, but there are a lot more questions on this team now than one year ago, and that was even when they cut their long-time starting QB. Kansas City Chiefs Because the team has publicly committed to rebuilding and has undergone a massive youth movement, the goals and signs of success are much different than for other teams. Miami Dolphins This team wasn?t as awful as the 1-15 record they posted in 2007, but it wasn?t a fluke either. The rebuild has begun, and the overall talent level of the team is headed in the right direction. But it?s still got a long way to go before this team gets back to .500. Minnesota Vikings It?s refreshing to see a team like the Vikings, one that is built around running the ball and stopping the other team from doing the same. They have the personnel to make it work, and the passing game is going to be better than most people expect. New England Patriots Still the best team in the NFL by a wider margin than most people give them credit, the Patriots will have no problem racking up at least 11 wins and another AFC East title. New Orleans Saints The Saints will bounce back from a disappointing 2007, thanks to improvement in both the pass rush and special teams return units. This group probably isn?t as dynamic as the 06 version that made it to the NFC title game, but the Saints drew a favorable schedule and have enough firepower to get back into the playoffs and pose a real threat once they get there. New York Giants It?s always hard to tell how a team handles unexpected success, but just as Tom Coughlin was the right fit to lead the Giants to the Super Bowl, he is probably a great fit to give them their best chance to repeat. New York Jets The Jets will certainly be better, but much of what they did is lipstick on the pig, not growing a prized playoff hog. If Brett Favre still has the magic and all the pricey imports earn their keep, the Jets have a good chance to notch 9-10 wins and earn a Wild Card spot. Oakland Raiders How quickly JaMarcus Russell is able to translate his physical tools to the NFL game will go a long way towards whether these Raiders challenge for 8 wins or challenge for the 1st overall pick in 2009. Philadelphia Eagles Look at why 2007 was so disappointing for the Eagles: McNabb?s recovery, Coach Reid?s personal issues off the field, injuries to Dawkins and Smith, a tough schedule, Akers? slump, and an inability to create turnovers. This team is poised for a big 2008. Pittsburgh Steelers The starters are good enough to carry the Steelers to the playoffs. But between the lousy pass protection and the paper-thin defense chock full of older players, that is asking a lot. A look at the schedule breeds pessimism, as Pittsburgh plays all of their non-divisional games against teams that finished with winning records in 2007. San Diego Chargers There is so much talent all over the roster that the Chargers can absorb a slow start by some of the walking wounded and still get a first round playoff bye. San Francisco 49ers This 49ers appear to have improved but the QB issue is a major problem for an offense highly dependent on great QB play. The defense will be better, but it?s still not a unit that will produce enough QB pressure or turnovers for the team to make a big leap forward. Seattle Seahawks If Matt Hasselbeck can overcome more typically erratic WR play and the run defense holds up, Seattle should earn a playoff bye and home field advantage, which in their case is an extreme advantage and is why they are the best bet to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. St. Louis Rams The Rams have too many holes in the pass defense and questions with the right side of the OL to be a promising playoff team--but in their weak division it?s certainly not impossible. Tampa Bay Buccaneers It is difficult to trust the fortunes of any QB on this roster to lead the Bucs back to the playoffs, certainly not with this cast of wideouts. Expect another strong season from the defense, and if they can force enough turnovers and dominate field position there is hope for another NFC South title. Tennessee Titans With the worst collection of wide receivers in the NFL, the Titans defense will have a hard time leading the club to overachieve again while their schedule does them no favors either. Washington Redskins As much as the Redskins' fans want to ignore it, this team was really lucky to be 5-7 before they went on their memorable run behind their backup QB after losing their most talented player.
