Jones-Drew Out To Surpass Smith's All-Time Mark

Oct 31, 2014 1:29 PM

Maurice Jones-Drew is still looking for a long-term contract from the Jaguars, but that hasn't kept him to setting some lofty goals. Jones-Drew was asked Tuesday if he believed he could catch Emmitt Smith for the all-time rushing record. "Yeah, I think it's doable," he told ESPN Radio in Denver. "I definitely think it's doable." Jones-Drew explained why he'd probably need a great deal of help to achieve the feat. "Once again, Emmitt Smith was in a different situation than a lot of us, though," he said. "I mean, he had a Hall of Fame receiver, Hall of Fame quarterback, Hall of Fame offensive line, Hall of Fame fullback. Whoever put that team together did a heck of a job, and it just showed. "Don't get me wrong: he was the reason they won, but he had a lot of guys around him as well."

Sep 3, 2014 12:43 AM

The Jaguars and kicker Josh Scobee remain far apart in contract talks as training camp nears. Jacksonville general manager Gene Smith said last week that there have been no talks recently. Scobee's agent says he's been waiting for months to hear from the Jaguars. "Josh has asked me not to discuss specifics of negotiations other than what has already been said," agent Ken Harris told the Florida Times-Union. "That is, we had some talks early on involving proposals from both sides, but haven't heard back from them in months. We know our last proposal is very fair."

The Jaguars signed undrafted rookie Mike Brown out of Liberty and the wide receiver is drawing comparisons to Wes Welker. Brown is ideally built to be a slot receiver at 5-foot-10 and 205 pounds. "We talk about the roster often in staff meetings," Brown's college coach Charlie Skalaski said. "Mike has left an extremely favorable impression on the whole staff, from the offensive coordinator to the head coach to the special teams coordinator...I know Jerry Sullivan said Mike has a lot of the same qualities as Wes Welker."

Jaguars Don't Plan To Give MJD New Deal

Jul 3, 2014 11:24 AM

The Jaguars have no plans to renegotiate running back Maurice Jones-Drew's current contract. Gene Smith confirmed that Jones-Drew wants a new deal, but made it clear it's not going to happen. "Obviously, he has expressed that he would like to renegotiate and we have expressed again that we feel he has a contract with two years left that we expect him to fulfill those obligations," Smith said. Jones-Drew, who led the NFL in rushing last season with 1,606 yards, has two years remaining on a five-year deal worth $31 million that he signed in 2009.
