Jacksonville Jaguars personnel chief James "Shack" Harris resigned Tuesday, taking the fall for a franchise that failed to meet expectations this season. Team owner Wayne Weaver promoted Gene Smith to the position. Smith previously served as the team's executive director of college and pro personnel. Harris received most of the blame for Jacksonville signing receiver Jerry Porter and cornerback Drayton Florence during the offseason. The Jaguars (5-10) paid a combined $23 million guaranteed to Porter and Florence to step into starting roles.

The Colts clinched a playoff berth on Thursday night in their win over the Jaguars. Indianapolis trailed 14-0 in the first quarter but rallied back to win 31-24 on the strength of Peyton Manning's arm and an opportunistic defensive play. Manning went 29-for-34 with 364 yards and three touchdowns. Without Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne had seven catches for 108 yards and a touchdown, and Dallas Clark tallied eight receptions for 105 yards and a score of his own. David Garrard passed well against the tough secondary of the Colts, going 28-for-41 with 329 yards, one touchdown and a costly interception. With less than five minutes left in regulation, Keiwan Ratliff intercepted Garrard and returned it 35 yards to score the game-winning touchdown. Maurice Jones-Drew rushed twenty times for 91 yards and tallied seven receptions for 71 yards in the loss. The Colts' running game was almost nonexistent -- they tallied 32 yards on eighteen carries -- but they still recorded their eighth straight victory.

Jaguars' coach Jack Del Rio has denied reports that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is out at the end of the season. "Gregg does have a one-year deal," Del Rio said. "He's got a lot of options. He's a very popular coach. He's a very good coach. ... We have not visited that. ... He's earned that ability to take a good look around and decide what he wants to do. But people making things up like that, it hadn't come from me, and anything that doesn't come from me is just people speculating."

Fred Taylor's season might be over because of an injured left thumb, which means that his career with the Jaguars could be over, as well. Taylor was looking to get a second opinion on his injured thumb Wednesday before deciding whether to go on injured reserve. Taylor, who is 16th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 11,271 yards, will be a free agent at the conclusion of the season.

Richard Collier, the former Jaguars' lineman who was shot in September and had his leg amputated, said Tuesday that he "remembers everything." He didn't think he had been injured initially. Only when he heard paramedics counting his injuries did he realize he'd been struck. "When I got in the ambulance, I remember they were counting bullets," Collier, who was shot 14 times, said. "I was like man, that's a lot." He is now paralyzed from the waist down. "I've always been told I was a strong person," Collier said. "I think I never really paid attention to it. I realized now how much strength I really have, how much patience I have. "I've realized there's so much more to me than playing football."

Mario Williams had a season-high three sacks and forced a fumble, and Steve Slaton ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead the Texans to a 30-17 win over the slumping Jaguars on Monday night, as reported by the Associated Press.
