Harnish Had Deal With Chargers Before Colts Drafted Him

Sep 6, 2014 7:42 PM

The Colts made Chandler Harnish the final pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, as known as Mr. Irrelevant, apparently stealing him from the Chargers. "Late in the seventh round I'm very depressed. ... I was getting calls from like the Kansas City Chiefs, the Tennessee Titans, St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders, just a bunch of teams were (calling) -- and I'm talking to my agent every three minutes," the former Northern Illinois quarterback explains. "It looked like we were about ready to set up a free agency deal. I was ready to go to San Diego. ... "They wanted the decision 10 minutes after they could put the deal on the table, and this was still at pick 240," Harnish says. "So there were still 13 picks to go. And they put the deal on the table that they wanted me to be a free agent and I had to say 'yes' to it. ... We tell San Diego we want that deal. Well, my agent tells the Colts, 'Hey, he's going to San Diego if you guys don't draft him with your last pick.' So, because of that, the Colts were like, 'We want him. We want to take him before he goes to free agency, and then he goes to San Diego.'"

"There shouldn't be a difficult process with that." Indianapolis is expected to ink top pick Luck to a four-year, $22 million contract. "The sooner the better on all the draft picks," Irsay said. "We're going to present all the picks (offers) and say, 'Here is the deal. Period.'"

The Colts drafted tight end Coby Fleener with the second pick in the second round of the NFL Draft. The move reunites him with former Stanford teammate Andrew Luck, the first overall pick. "I just sent him a text message that had a lot of exclamation points in it," said Fleener, who had 10 touchdown catches last season, of Luck. "I expected to be on a team where I wasn't familiar with the offense or the quarterback. I can't wait to get started, to be honest with you."

Colts Remove Manning's Banner From Lucas Oil

Oct 31, 2014 6:41 AM

The Colts have removed the large banner of Peyton Manning from Lucas Oil Stadium. The move comes a day before the Colts will take Andrew Luck, Manning's replacement, with the No. 1 overall choice in the NFL draft. Pete Ward, the team's chief operating officer, says the timing had nothing to do with the draft. The banner had hung outside the stadium since its opening in 2008.
