April 2012 - Indianapolis Colts Wiretap
Bill Polian Joining ESPN As Analyst
Former Colts vice chairman Bill Polian is joining ESPN as an NFL analyst.
He will start March 12, the day before the free-agency period begins.
"We will tap into his expertise immediately on ESPN in preparation for the upcoming NFL draft, free agency and arguably the biggest offseason story in years with the future of his former quarterback Peyton Manning still to be determined," Seth Markman, ESPN senior coordinating producer for NFL studio shows, said.
Wayne, Manning May Be A Package Deal
If Peyton Manning leaves the Colts to play for another team, he would love to see Reggie Wayne follow him, according to a source.
The quarterback loves familiarity and Wayne has been with Manning for 10 of his 11 seasons in Indianapolis.
Peter King reports that the 33-year-old Wayne, a looming free agent when the market opens March 13, is very interested in the combo platter also.
McNabb: Peyton, Redskins Would Be Poor Fit
Donovan McNabb doesn't think the Redskins should sign Peyton Manning if the quarterback becomes available.
"Peyton's not gonna go there," McNabb said recently on ESPN Radio's John Thompson Show. "I don't see Peyton ending up in Washington. Because what happens is now, you're bringing in another veteran who will be 35 36, who has been in one offense throughout his career. It's the same situation.
"Now he comes over, and as they say now, Peyton is such an offensive coordinator on the offense. So now what does that do to your offensive coordinator? Does he step down? Does he step back? Does he begin to change the whole offense according to the play of the quarterback that he has in Peyton Manning? Well, I didn't see that happen, so I definitely don't see that happening for Peyton."
McNabb had a horrible tenure with Washington after the team acquired him in a trade with the Eagles in 2010. McNabb and Mike Shanahan did not work well together, and the result was a 6-10 season.
"You know what, as I look back on that year, I was very excited on joining the Washington Redskins," McNabb said.
"I loved Dan Snyder, I love his attitude and his approach. I loved Bruce Allen and what he was trying to do. Situations were a lot different once I got there, with coaching and play calling and things of that nature, where it wasn’t suited around the talent of your quarterback."
Colts Can't Watch Manning Throw Before Bonus Is Due
The reasons why the Colts are likely to cut Peyton Manning before his $28 million roster bonus is due on March 8 continue to mount.
Colts owner Jim Irsay, general manager Ryan Grigson, and coach Chuck Pagano can't watch Manning throw until April due to rules in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The team's medical staff can watch Manning and report back, but they are not allowed to tape the workout.
Indy Wants To Host Another Super Bowl
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard says the city that just hosted its first Super Bowl wants to do it again in the near future.
"There will be people within the next couple years or so, I think, that would be looking at putting something back in, or at least determining when we would be doing that sort of thing," Ballard said Saturday at the NFL Combine.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said the city did a "fantastic" job of hosting Super Bowl XLVI.
Luck Willing To Play Behind Peyton
There apparently won't be any issues if the Colts retain Peyton Manning and also draft Andrew Luck.
"If I have the opportunity to learn from a guy like that, of course you're going to take advantage of it," Luck said. "Absolutely."
The probable top pick had nothing but praise for Manning.
"Peyton was my football hero," Luck said. "That's who I modeled myself after. You never replace a guy like that. ... Who knows what happens?"

Luck Remains Undecided About Throwing In Indy
Andrew Luck has yet to make a final decision on whether or not he will throw at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
"I haven't decided what I'm going to do completely yet at this point so it could be all of it, maybe none of it, we'll see," Luck said.
"I'm sure I'll sit down in the next couple of days, talk to my dad and my agent and formulate the plan."
The Indianapolis Star reported earlier this month that Luck was open to throwing at the combine, but was told by the Colts to wait until Stanford's pro day on March 22.
Jets Leave Door Open For Peyton
Peyton Manning is still an Colt at the moment and Rex Ryan and Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum reiterated that their quarterback is Mark Sanchez.
However, both said the Jets will explore any opportunity that they think will make the team better when asked repeatedly why the team won't close the door on Manning if Sanchez is their quarterback.
