Internet threats of "dirty bomb" attacks at NFL stadiums this weekend were a hoax inspired by a writing competition between two men trying to come up with scary threats, a law enforcement official said Thursday.
The threats, which were posted on a Web site last week and mentioned stadiums in seven U.S. cities, were deemed to be false by the FBI on Thursday after agents questioned a 20-year-old Milwaukee man.
"This is a hoax," said Special Agent Richard Kolko, a spokesman at the FBI's Washington headquarters. A joint statement from the FBI and Homeland Security said fans "should be reassured of their security as they continue to attend sporting events this weekend."

NFL Suspends Robinson For One Year
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Koren Robinson was suspended without pay Tuesday for a minimum of one year for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
The league's action came hours after Robinson pleaded not guilty to charges of drunken driving and fleeing police stemming
Packers Groupie Spicing Up Wisconsin Political Race
The usually ho-hum race for Wisconsin secretary of state is being spiced up by one candidate's naughty tell-all book about her bed-hopping exploits with Green Bay football legends during the team's glory days under Vince Lombardi in the 1960s.
Sandy Sullivan, a 65-year-old Republican with no political experience, self-published a gushing memoir in 2004 titled "Green Bay Love Stories and Other Affairs" in which she claims she was the girlfriend of Packers Paul Hornung and Dan Currie, deflected a pass from Hall of Famer Don Hutson and was on the receiving end of a saucy comment from Richard Nixon.
Robinson Returns To Packers' Practice
One day after receiving a 90-day jail sentence for a probation violation in Washington, Koren Robinson was practicing with the Packers.
Robinson missed practice Wednesday to attend a court hearing in Kirkland, Wash., where he was sentenced to 90 days in jail after a judge determined he violated a probation established when he pleaded guilty to a DUI there last year.
Packers' WR Robinson Will Go To Jail For Probation Violation
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Koren Robinson was sentenced Wednesday to 90 days in jail for violating probation in a drunken driving case.
Robinson appeared in Municipal Court in this Seattle suburb, where he pleaded guilty last year to drunken driving.
Favre Expects To Play Sunday Despite Injuries
Despite still feeling the effects of a possible slight concussion and pinched nerve in his neck, Brett Favre expects to play Sunday against St. Louis.
The Green Bay Packers quarterback hasn't thrown a football since he was hit hard in Monday night's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Favre was considering participating in the Packers' practice session on Wednesday even though he feels some pain when he turns his head a certain way.
He spent time in the steam room on Tuesday, but can't do much else to heal.
"It's a pinched nerve and maybe a slight concussion, but there's nothing you can do for it," he said Wednesday.
Packers Waive CB Ahmad Carroll
The Green Bay Packers ran out of patience with nickel cornerback Ahmad Carroll.
Less than 24 hours after his up-and-down performance in Monday night's 31-9 loss to Philadelphia, the Packers placed Carroll on waivers Tuesday. A 2004 first-round draft pick by Green Bay, Carroll never realized his potential, and the Packers had seen enough.
Three Receivers Injured On Monday
Three receivers left Monday night's Green Bay-Philadelphia game in the third quarter because of injuries.
Philadelphia's Reggie Brown and Donte' Stallworth left the game, as did Green Bay's Robert Ferguson.
Brown was taken to the locker room for X-rays after he hurt his shoulder on a 23-yard completion from Donovan McNabb.
