Lions, Chargers Discussing Cromartie Trade

Sep 30, 2014 9:29 PM

The Lions have begun discussions with the Chargers about acquiring cornerback Antonio Cromartie, a league source told NFL.com on Sunday. The Chargers have been shopping Cromartie, but there had been little interest until the Lions reached out. "It may be time to move on," Cromartie said recently. "I have complained to the coaches about certain stuff, about the way we play, and they know that. But if it's time to part ways and that's in the Lord's will, then that's what's got to happen. But I would love to continue to finish out either my contract or my career in San Diego."

Lions Could Deal No. 2 Pick, Chase LT

Jun 7, 2014 10:08 AM

The Lions are considering a number of different moves in the wake of 30 losses in the past two seasons. Detroit could trade the No. 2 pick and even chase recently-released running back LaDainian Tomlinson. "We're open to just about everything," Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said Thursday. "Whether you keep the second pick or whether you trade down, it doesn't change what you have to do -- that's make good decisions in the draft. There are blue-chip players available a lot of different spots in the draft."

While there are an abundance of teams looking to trade down in the draft, there is the usual scarcity of teams looking to trade up.

Lions Will Follow Best Player Available Strategy

Oct 11, 2014 7:24 AM

The Lions will take the best non-quarterback available in the draft. "Philosophically, our position hasn't changed," GM Martin Mayhew said last month. "We want to look for the best players we can find without regard to what side of the ball that they play, what position that they play. "Obviously, we wouldn't take a quarterback with the second overall pick at this point, so there's some common sense in there, too. But we want to continue to add talented players, no matter what side of the ball those guys play on or what their positions are."

Kevin Smith Encouraged By Rehab

Jul 24, 2014 11:25 PM

Kevin Smith hopes to return to the Lions sooner rather than later during the '10 season. ?I?ve been working out at the University of Miami just doing the basics trying to get my flexibility back,? he said. ?I?m starting to squat a little bit, doing some leg presses, trying to get the muscle back in my left quad ? I had surgery on my left knee. Everything feels good ? everything?s going well right now.?

Lions Coach Tampering With K.C. Players?

Jul 8, 2014 1:21 PM

Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham may be overstepping his boundaries regarding his interest in some of Kansas City's players. "They keep wanting to dump players," Cunningham said late last season. "I would like to be there to catch a lot of them, because I know a couple of those guys." He worked as the defensive coordinator of the Chiefs from 2004 to 2008. "Some of those young kids I coached, I really believed they were going to be good players, and I know I'm right about that," Cunningham said. "Now what's happened there is the same thing in any organization. A new guy comes in, and they decide to go to the 3-4 defense when the structure of the personnel was built for the 4-3."

Lions Will Have Options At Running Back

Oct 7, 2014 4:12 AM

The Lions will be looking to upgrade at running back this offseason and there should be plenty of options. "This offseason we have to look at every position and evaluate what kind of players we're going to bring in and at what level," Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said last month. "The question will be what their role is going to be. Is it going to be a guy you bring in and say this guy is going to be our starter? Or is it going to be a guy you bring in to supplement what you already have." Detroit signed free-agent DeDe Dorsey to bolster their roster. "We're going through the process," Mayhew said. "You look at free agency, you look at guys who are available. It's going to also depend on what group we're dealing with. Are we dealing with the four-year-and-above guys or the six-year-and-above guys? "I wouldn't say we've made a determination either way on that. I wouldn't say that there's something missing, but I would say we're looking closely at every avenue to get better." If there isn't a new collective agreement, running backs like Ronnie Brown (Dolphins), Mike Bell (Saints), Jerome Harrison (Browns), Darren Sproles (Chargers), LenDale White (Titans) and Jerious Norwood (Falcons) could hit the market.
