Bears Trade Olsen To Panthers For Pick

Oct 31, 2014 12:49 PM

The Bears have traded tight end Greg Olsen to the Panthers in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2012 draft, according to a league source. Olsen then agreed to a four-year, $24 million extension with $10 million guaranteed, added a source. "I think it's bittersweet," Olsen said. "I've made it clear since the day I got here that I've really enjoyed my time here in Chicago. My plans all along, obviously, were to play my career here. ... The guys on the team have been awesome. And the fans obviously are second to none and this city really embraces their team. ... At the same time, I feel like for my career and going forward to go join a team that has so much promise and the guys they have in place already down there. And [offensive coordinator] Rob Chudzinski [is] a guy that I know from my college days. And what he's done with tight ends and how his offense focused around that position. So I feel like it's a great opportunity for me going forward and it's something I'm looking forward to."

Agent Says Bears Offering Olsen In Trade

Oct 6, 2014 7:56 PM

The Bears are offering up tight end Greg Olsen in a trade, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. Rosenhaus sent a mass email to the league's general managers and personnel people on Wednesday night announcing the Bears were making Olsen available for trade. "The Bears have granted me permission to seek a trade for Greg Olsen," Rosenhaus wrote. "Please let me know if interested. Sounds like the Bears will be very reasonable on the compensation in return for Greg." But 11 minutes later, Rosenhaus sent another mass email to the same recipients, asking them to ignore his previous message. "Please disregard my previous email regarding Greg Olsen," the one-sentence email said.

Bears Interested In Brad Smith

Sep 30, 2014 11:29 PM

The Bears won't be major players in free agency, but sources say the team has a legitimate interest in Jets receiver Brad Smith. A fourth-round pick in 2006 and former quarterback at Missouri, Smith caught just four passes last season for 44 yards with no touchdowns, and rushed for 299 yards on 38 attempts. Throughout his five-year career, Smith has contributed at several positions on offense and in the return game.

Chicago's Forte Will Seek Extension Soon

Sep 30, 2014 11:34 PM

Bears running back Matt Forte is expected to soon seek a contract extension in the wake of his above-average production. Forte is ranked fifth in the NFL in yards from scrimmage (4,731) since 2008, he joined Walter Payton as the only Bears to notch 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in the same season and accumulated 1,400-plus yards from scrimmage in each of his first three seasons, the only player in franchise history to accomplish such a feat. "Any time a player has been producing very well," Forte said, "they're going to come back and say, 'Hey, throw me a bone here.'"

Canton Stung By Loss Of HOF Game

Jul 22, 2014 9:03 AM

For the first time in 45 years, there will be no Hall of Fame preseason game. It's much more than just a lost preseason game for the Canton, Ohio community. The labor dispute between NFL owners and players forced the league to call off the annual Hall of Fame game between Chicago and St. Louis scheduled for Aug. 7. It's a financial blow to the Hall of Fame, which could lose about $1.5 million out of its $20 million annual operating budget. And it's a big loss for the community, which gets more than just a financial boost from the event. "We're such a football community," said Joanne Murray, director of the Hall of Fame festival for the local Chamber of Commerce. "From the staff to the man on the street, I doubt you'd find a single person who would say they're not disappointed. "We're just going to have to get through this unusual year and embrace the other events."

Harris: Steve Smith Would Fit With Bears

Sep 11, 2014 7:13 PM

Bears safety Chris Harris has been working out with former teammate Steve Smith of the Panthers during the lockout. Harris has also been working to try and recruit Smith. Smith went to the home of Panthers owner Jerry Richardson late last season and asked to be traded, according to the Charlotte Observer. Harris, who played with Smith in Carolina for three seasons, thinks if the Bears could somehow acquire Smith, it would make sense. "If the opportunity is there, why not?" Harris said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "You can never have enough big-time playmakers on your team. "We have plenty of those on our team now. It definitely wouldn't hurt to have another one."
