Ravens Want Pick For Trade Mess With Bears

Oct 31, 2014 3:46 PM

The Ravens want draft pick compensation from the Bears for the failed trade that forced the team to skip the 26th selection, according to the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune. The NFL confirmed Friday that it's looking into the situation, which happened Thursday night after the Ravens told the league they had agreed to send the 26th pick to the Bears in exchange for the 29th selection and a fourth-rounder (127th overall). Chicago didn't confirm the trade to the league in time, forcing Baltimore to fall back in the draft order.

Bears Take Blame For Failed Trade With Ravens

Oct 31, 2014 6:31 AM

The Bears failed to complete a trade with the Ravens late in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft on Thursday night, leading Baltimore to pass on their selection. The Chiefs jumped ahead of the Ravens and selected wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin at No. 26. Baltimore then jumped back in the draft and took Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith at No. 27. Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said he called the NFL with two and a half minutes left on the clock to consummate the trade and never got confirmation from the league. "There was an agreement made between the [Bears] team and I," Newsome said. "I got on the phone with the NFL but the [Bears] never got confirmation from the league. At that point I was asked by the league to make the pick." The Bears would have traded their fourth-round pick, 127th overall, to the Ravens in the deal that would have seen the teams swap first-rounders. "We had a disconnect and there might be something said about it because of not communicating with the league and proper protocol; that was my fault," Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo said. "I called Baltimore and apologized to Baltimore and told them it was our fault. They did everything according to the rules, and we thought we were following everything, and we just ran out of time. It was a glitch on our part and that glitch obviously was under my reign."

Martz Turned Down Extension With Bears

Sep 30, 2014 11:59 PM

Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz recently turned down a one-year extension offer from the team, according to a source. Martz rejected the deal because it didn't offer a raise from his current salary. He is scheduled to make $1 million in 2011. The only Chicago coaching staff member who received a significant raise in the offseason was offensive line coach Mike Tice, who only got his deal after being denied permission to interview for an offensive coordinator position.

Gould Blames Owners' 'Greed' For Lockout

Jan 30, 2014 5:15 AM

Bears kicker Robbie Gould, the team's player representative, blames the "greed" of the NFL's owners for the current lockout. "Look fans don't buy tickets to see Virginia or Brian McCaskey. They pay to watch Brian Urlacher, Drew Brees and all the great players. This lockout is all because of the owners' greed. I'm sorry if that sounds cold, but it is the truth," he said. On the topic of players missing game checks if the lockout goes into the regular season he was also frank. "I have been saving my money for this lockout for three years," he said. "We have known it was probably coming and we were advised to save our money. I know a lot of guys who prepared for this and are fine. The guys who didn't plan for it, that is their fault."

Bears May Trade Out Of First Round

Oct 12, 2014 2:25 AM

If recent history is any indication, Bears GM Jerry Angelo won't hesitate to deal the team's No. 29 overall pick and move out of the first round of the NFL draft, according to an ESPN.com report on Thursday. "I know the question will come up: Will you trade up, will you trade down?" Angelo said Thursday at Halas Hall. "We're always going to be flexible. We always have. Trading down is easier to do and if there's enough players on the board when it's our pick [and] it makes sense, then it's something we would consider very seriously."

Bears May Target LB In Middle Rounds

Oct 15, 2014 11:42 PM

The Bears may look to fill their need for another linebacker in the middle rounds of this month's NFL Draft. With free agency on hold because of the lockout, Chicago enters the draft with just two linebackers under contract. They aren't likely to address the need early in the draft, but their lower round picks could be used.

"The other day I got kicked off a high school field trying to go out and do some field work, so it's not easy," Olsen said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "You have to find your spots and find someone that will let you use their field.
