Zbikowski Wants To Box Past 2012
Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski told The Baltimore Sun on Friday that he'd like to work out an NFL contract that will allow him to continue boxing in 2012 and beyond.
He defeated Richard Bryant via first-round TKO on March 12 and is set to fight Caleb Grummet in Atlantic City on Saturday night. Zbikowski will fight in Atlantic City again on April 9, followed by a bout in Dallas in late April.
Zbikowski, who has yet to sign his contract with the Ravens as a restricted free agent, could become an unrestricted free agent in 2012, depending on the new collective bargaining agreement.
"Without a doubt -- if I can get that worked out -- that's my perfect world," Zbikowski told The Sun. "Other people might not feel that same way. If we can get that worked out, I can play at M&T Bank Stadium in the season and fight at M&T Bank Stadium in the offseason."
Zbikowski Training With Emanuel Steward
Emanuel Steward is training Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski and will be in his corner for his fight Saturday night in Atlantic City, N.J., on the Yuri Gamboa-Jorge Solis undercard.
He is training Zbikowski in Detroit at the Kronk Boxing Gym.
"He told me boxing was his first love," Steward told SI.com. "I don't know where this is going to go right now but he seems committed to it."
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has no problems with Zbikowski boxing during the lockout.
"I think it's awesome," Bisciotti told The Baltimore Sun. "I wanted to walk him into the ring but I'm not allowed to communicate with him. I would get the Don King hair going."
Ravens Want To Extend Flacco By 2012
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti says the team's goal is to have Joe Flacco signed to a contract extension by 2012.
Bisciotti doesn't want Flacco to enter the final year of his deal not knowing that his future is in Baltimore.
"I hate to speak for [Ravens General Manager] Ozzie [Newsome], but I would imagine that like John Harbaugh, we would be starting negotiations with [Flacco] so that entering 2012 he won't be playing in his final year," the owner told The Baltimore Sun at the annual owners meetings.
"I would anticipate an extension that starts in 2012."
Zbikowski Improves To 2-0 As Boxer
Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski improved to 2-0 as a boxer on Saturday night.
He barely broke a sweat in stopping Richard Bryant at 1:45 of the first round of a scheduled four-round fight on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Mayorga 154-pound title fight.
"I was looking to get a little more work but you take a win any way you can get it," Zbikowski said. "I know I hurt him with the hook, you could feel the air come out."
Harbaugh Isn't Sure If Houshmandzadeh, Stallworth Will Return
Ravens coach John Harbaugh says he isn't sure if wide receivers T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Donte Stallworth will remain with the team.
"You can't really put a percentage basis on it because there are so many things up in the air at this time," Harbaugh said of the chance the receivers will return.
"There are obviously a lot of issues that haven't been a part of the equation in the past. It's just a different calendar now with free agency."
Houshmandzadeh, 33, and Stallworth, 30, each signed one-year contracts with Baltimore last offseason.
Derrick Mason Is Preparing For 15th Season
Derrick Mason doesn't plan to retire despite the possibility of a lockout this coming season, according to WBAL-AM.
"No. Not really," Mason said. "I haven't really given that much thought because I'm very optimistic that something will get done."
Mason, 37, said he is working out and maintaining his normal offseason routine.
"Business as usual," Mason said. "Nothing's no different for me. I'm going to continue to work out and continue to do the things I've been doing for the last 15 years -- being back in Nashville, working out, being with the family -- that's what I'm going to do."
Rosenhaus Expects Ravens, McGahee To Part Ways
Drew Rosenhaus expects the Ravens to part ways with running back Willis McGahee, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
"We don't expect to be back unless they'll pay him his contract," the agent said.
It's been assumed that the Ravens would release McGahee because he is scheduled to make $6 million in 2011.
Baltimore's Zbikowski Will Box During Lockout
If the NFL locks out as expected, Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski plans to return to boxing.
He fought professionally once in 2006.
Zbikowski will fight a four-round bout as a cruiserweight on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on the televised undercard of the Showtime PPV card.
He played college football at Notre Dame from 2003 to 2007. He went by the name "Tommy Z" during the build up to his lone pro fight, coming into the ring to the Notre Dame fight song. He needed just 49 seconds to knock out Robert Bell at Madison Square Garden.
Ngata Signs Tender With Ravens
Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata signed his franchise tender Wednesday, according to a league source.
Ngata will make $12.476 million next season on the one-year contract.
Baltimore drafted Ngata with the 12th overall pick back in 2006.
