Ron Rivera: Washington Name Issue 'A Discussion For Another Time'

Jun 30, 2020 9:22 AM

Ron Rivera was asked during an interview on 670 The Score’s McNeil & Parkins Show about the controversial name of the NFL's Washington franchise.

Rivera was named the team's head coach earlier this offseason.

"I think that's a discussion for another time," Rivera said, adding that the team's name was "always part of football" when he was growing up.

"I think it's all about the moment and the timing," he added. "But, you know, I'm just somebody that's from a different era that when football wasn't such a big part of the political scene. You know, that's one of the tough things for me, too, is I've always wanted to try to keep that separate. People have wanted me to get involved in politics, you know, when I was coaching and I kept telling them, 'It's not for me to get up here and influence people.' I have my beliefs, I know what I think, you know, I support the movements, you know, support the players. I believe in what they're doing and, again, you know, I think that there are certain elements to certain things that it's all about the timing and the best time to discuss those things."

Netflix To Produce Six-Part Series On Colin Kaepernick

Jun 30, 2020 9:15 AM

Netflix has announced that Colin Kaepernick will be the subject of a six-part series produced by director Ava DuVernay.

The series, "Colin in Black and White," will explore the quarterback's high school years, showing the experiences and insights that led to his activism.

Kaepernick will appear as a narrator, with an actor playing him as a youth in the scripted drama of a Black child adopted by a white family.

"Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens," Kaepernick said in a release. "We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It's an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see."

NFLPA Directs Agents To Educate Clients On Coronavirus Risk

Jun 30, 2020 9:13 AM

The NFL Players Association has instructed agents to talk to all of their clients about risk factors that could make them more susceptible to severe illness as a result of the coronavirus.

The scheduled start of training camps is inching closer. July 28 is the reporting date for most teams.

In a letter sent to agents Monday, the NFLPA wrote, "The NFLPA is directing you to provide each of your clients with important risk factor information provided by the Centers for Disease Control that appears below, and by mid-July, you must engage each of your clients in a conversation about the vital importance of carefully reviewing this information with their personal physician. They should ask their personal doctors any and all questions they have regarding these risk factors in light of their personal medical history and their job as an NFL player. They should also discuss any risk factors with their team doctor."

Mark Davis Wonders If NFL Needs Bubble For 2020 Season

Jun 30, 2020 3:09 PM

Mark Davis wondered on the record whether the NFL may need a bubble environment to complete the 2020 season.

“You can keep players from the fans, but you can’t keep players from the players,” Davis said in the Las Vegas Review-Journal article that focuses primarily on his complaints regarding the decision to cover the first eight rows of seats with tarps. “That could be our Achilles’ heel. Without some form of bubble, we may be asking for trouble.”

The NFL has 65 players per team along with large coaching staffs and trainers, which would make an NFL bubble incredibly large.

Johnny Manziel Concedes Career Is 'In The Past, Probably'

Jun 29, 2020 9:14 AM

Johnny Manziel has conceded that his football career is likely over.

The 27-year-old quarterback hasn't retired, but he hasn't received any contract offers.

"In the past, probably, is the way I'd characterize it," Manziel told Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalenche-Journal. "I've finally got to a point where I’m trying to achieve happiness in life, not happiness on the football field.

"I know a lot of people probably want me to come back and play and give it another chance, but I don’t know, as far as being a person and figuring out life as a young adult — trying to make it and figure it out — if I’ve ever been in a better place than I’m in right now. I can honestly say I’m happy and I’m doing the right things to try and put a smile on my face every day, and that means more to me than going out and grinding on a football field.'

Adam Gase Wants Jamal Adams On Jets' Roster

Jun 29, 2020 9:09 AM

Adam Gase, commenting publicly for the first time on Jamal Adams' contract dispute and trade request, made it seem as though a trade is out of the question.

Asked if he "absolutely, positively" wants Adams on the 2020 roster, Gase said, "Yes, I want Jamal on our team."

What Gase declined to address is whether the Jets are open to extending Adams' contract before the start of the season -- the heart of the dispute.

Adams, signed through 2021, is on record as saying he wants a new deal before the regular season.

"This is a tough part of the business, when one of your best players is working through things with our organization," Gase said. "We have to figure out a way to get to a good place, which will get him back, in the right spot and ready to go."

DeMaurice Smith: Workouts Go Against Player Safety

Jun 29, 2020 9:05 AM

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith isn't happy that NFL players continue to work out together despite a union advisory sent out last week saying they should stop doing so.

Smith was specifically asked about social media posts from workouts by Tom Brady and Russell Wilson and said they aren't acting "in the best interest of player safety."

On June 20, Dr. Thom Mayer, the NFLPA's medical director, issued a statement advising players to avoid working out with teammates to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

"They're not in the best interest of protecting our players heading into training camp, and I don't think they are in the best interest of us getting through an entire season," Smith told USA Today.
