NFLPA President Calls On NFL To Eliminate Artificial Turf

Sep 30, 2020 4:05 PM

NFL Players Association president JC Tretter is calling for NFL teams to change all field surfaces to natural grass to reduce the risk of injury to players.

Players have a 28% higher rate of noncontact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf as compared to grass.

"The data stands out," Tretter said Wednesday during a videoconference with media. "Those numbers are staggering, the difference in injury rate between turf and natural grass. It's possible to get grass in every location, and it's about pushing for that. We all should be working toward the safest style of play. We know the dangers of playing on turf. That's not good for anybody. It's not good for players. It's not good for the GMs and the head coaches. It's not good for the owners. It's not good for the fans. Increased injuries isn't good for anybody.

"Until we can find a way to get synthetic turf to respond and react like natural grass, it's too much of a danger to continue to play on and expect different results."

Thirteen NFL stadiums use artificial turf.

NFL Postpones Titans/Steelers To Monday Or Tuesday

Sep 30, 2020 12:42 PM

The NFL has postponed Sunday's game between the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers to either Monday or Tuesday.

The postponement follows positive COVID-19 tests among the Titans from four players.

Mike Vrabel said Wednesday that some of the players who tested positive were experiencing flu-like symptoms.

"I know there's going to be a lot of questions about the game and about who's to blame and where it started. Nobody's to blame. We're in a pandemic," Vrabel said. "... This is a very unfortunate situation, but one that we're confident that we will be able to handle safely with the football team and the players' best interests in mind."

An MRI revealed that Godwin suffered a mild pull in Week 3.

Godwin leads the Buccaneers with 11 catches this season.

Texans Don't Plan To Sign Earl Thomas

Sep 30, 2020 8:27 AM

The Houston Texans do not plan to sign Earl Thomas, according to a source.

The free agent safety met with Houston and underwent a physical. Thomas had a workout scheduled, but it did not take place.

Bill O'Brien told Thomas' agents that the NFL required the Texans to cancel Thomas' workout because of COVID-19 concerns.

However, a source said the decision not to sign Thomas wasn't related to COVID-19.

Lions Expected To Use Adrian Peterson As Lead Running Back

Sep 30, 2020 8:24 AM

Adrian Peterson will likely be the lead running back for the Detroit Lions for the foreseeable future.

Peterson had more snaps, rushes and yards than the rest of Detroit's running backs combined in Week 3.

The future Hall of Famer played 40 snaps in the Lions' 26-23 victory against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, getting 22 carries for 75 yards along with one catch for 10 yards.

"It's not anything that those guys are or aren't doing," Darrell Bevell said. "We're just trying to, again, accentuate their positives and put them in positions to be successful. You saw [D'Andre] Swift. His plays were a little bit down. We want to keep those up and get him more involved. The one play he catches, he has a nice catch-and-run, looks fast, looks explosive.

"It's just continuing to manage those guys and putting them in the best situations."

Raiders Looking Into Why Players Didn't Wear Masks At Charity Event

Sep 30, 2020 8:20 AM

Mark Davis says the Las Vegas Raiders are looking into why several players were not wearing masks while attending a charity event held by Darren Waller that broke Nevada rules for the coronavirus pandemic and might have violated NFL regulations.

The Darren Waller Foundation held a fundraising event Monday at the DragonRidge Country Club in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson. Players were seen on video without masks at the indoor event while talking and mingling with guests, who also weren't wearing masks.

"Guys have to be more stringent in fighting the virus," Mark Davis said. "It's still our toughest opponent."

The city of Henderson fined the DragonRidge Country Club $2,000 on Tuesday for four violations of the Nevada governor's COVID-19 emergency directives, including people not wearing masks and having more than 50 people at the event.

NFL Intends To Play Titans/Steelers Despite Positive COVID-19 Tests

Sep 29, 2020 5:25 PM

The NFL intends to play the Week 4 game between the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers in Nashville despite three players on the Titans testing positive for COVID-19.

Five personnel members have also tested positive for COVID-19.

One of the contingency plans to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to occur would be to move the game to Monday night.

"This is not unexpected," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote Tuesday to the chief executives and presidents for every team in a memo, which was obtained by ESPN. "There will be players and staff who will test positive during the season."

Dallas Goedert Out Indefinitely With Small Fracture In Ankle

Sep 29, 2020 1:04 PM

Dallas Goedert has a small fracture in his ankle, a league source confirmed.

Goedert is out indefinitely.

Goedert entered Week 3 as the team leader in targets, catches, receiving yards and yards after the catch.

"Losing a guy like Dallas that has a huge role in protections [and the] run game, but he's a playmaker with the ball in his hands and down the field. He's a big part of our game plan every week, and so losing him, we obviously had to make some adjustments on the fly, [which] makes it tough," Doug Pederson said.
