Dee Ford Underwent 'Extensive' Knee Surgery After Super Bowl

May 29, 2020 3:47 PM

Dee For underwent extensive knee surgery following Super Bowl LIV.

Dr. James Andrew underwent the surgery on Ford's left knee.

"We were spot-on with the injury as far as diagnosing it in training camp," Ford said. "I had a severe case of tendinitis. ... With my position, that's a blown tire. I feel great right now. I'm able to actually explode off of this knee. Thinking back on it, I can't believe I played a whole season on it, and we knew at the end of the day what we had to do. It had to be surgical, but I didn't want to miss the season. We had too much going on. I didn't want to miss that. It's in the bag now, though, I'm confident in that."

Ford has said the knee (and corresponding quadriceps issue) plagued him for many of his previous six seasons in the NFL -- perhaps never more so than last season, his first in San Francisco.

Brian Flores Releases Statement On George Floyd

May 29, 2020 3:45 PM

Brian Flores released a powerful statement on the death of George Floyd.

"I've had the privilege of being a part of many different circles that have included some very powerful and influential people of all different races and genders. The events of the last few weeks have brought some of the memories of those conversations back to light. I vividly remember the Colin Kaepernick conversations. 'Don't ever disrespect the flag' was the phrase that I heard over and over again. This idea that players were kneeling in support of social justice was something some people couldn't wrap their head around. The outrage that I saw in the media and the anger I felt in some of my own private conversations caused me to sever a few long-standing friendships.

"Most recently, I've had conversations about incentivizing teams for hiring minorities. Again, there was some outrage in the media and talks that this would cause division amongst coaches, executives and ownership. I bring these situations up because I haven't seen the same OUTRAGE from people of influence when the conversation turns to Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and most recently George Floyd. Many people who broadcast their opinions on kneeling or on the hiring of minorities don't seem to have an opinion on the recent murders of these young black men and women. I think many of them QUIETLY say that watching George Floyd plead for help is one of the more horrible things they have seen, but it's said amongst themselves where no one can hear. Broadcasting THAT opinion clearly is not important enough.

"I lead a group of young men who have the potential to make a real impact in this world. My message to them and anyone else who wants to listen is that honesty, transparency, and empathy go a long way in bringing people together and making change. I hope that the tragedies of the last few weeks will open our hearts and minds to a better way of communicating and hopefully create that change."

Mike Zimmer: Stefon Diggs Wasn't An Issue

May 29, 2020 8:25 AM

Mike Zimmer says the Minnesota Vikings didn't intend to trade Stefon Diggs, but the offer from the Buffalo Bills was too good for them to pass up.

The coach's statements echoed what Rick Spielman said earlier this month.

"If you said somebody was a pain in the butt, you probably wouldn't say him," Zimmer said of the wide receiver. "I've been around way worse guys than him, and I hope he has a great career and finishes up strong."

DeAndre Hopkins: I'm Best Wide Receiver In Football

May 29, 2020 3:45 PM

DeAndre Hopkins thinks he's the best pass-catcher in football despite not having the same consistency at quarterback as some of his peers.

Hopkins will now be paired with Kyler Murray after coming over in a trade from the Houston Texans.

"I definitely think I'm the best," Hopkins said on the Jalen & Jacoby Show. "I know I'm the best. Mike's my boy. I love [Saints wide receiver] Michael [Thomas] ... but he knows if I had Drew Brees my whole career what these numbers would be. [Falcons wide receiver] Julio Jones knows if I had Matt Ryan my whole career. That's my boy. I trained with Julio, too. He knows what these numbers would be.

"Those guys are definitely blessed to be in a position where, their whole career, they had a Pro Bowl quarterback -- quarterback that they spent multiple seasons with. But I don't complain. I don't make excuses. I go out there and work."

Hopkins caught passes from 10 different quarterbacks since he was drafted by the Texans in 2013.

Patrick Mahomes Opens Talks With Deal Expected To Be Tied To Cap

May 28, 2020 12:56 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have opened extension talks with Patrick Mahomes.

The deal is expected to be the first in NFL history with compensation tied to the salary cap.

Other players have tried to negotiate a deal tied to the cap but have been unsuccessful. By tying salary to the cap, Mahomes would ensure he remains amongst the NFL's most well compensated players.

Mahomes' rookie contract won't expire until after the 2021 season.

J.J. Watt Isn't Seeking Contract Extension

May 28, 2020 9:47 AM

J.J. Watt isn't seeking a contract extension with the Houston Texans.

Watt has two years and no guaranteed money left on his deal.

"No, I don't think that's necessary," he said. "I'm not going to sit here and demand anything. If I asked for an extension or money right now, I think that would be the wrong move."

Watt is under contract for $15.5 million in 2020 and $17.5 million in 2021.
