Players Now Required To Wear Masks On Sideline

Nov 24, 2020 8:56 AM

The NFL issued new guidance Monday for its operations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Players are now required to wear masks on the sideline unless they have their helmet on and are preparing to enter the game.

The new protocols will take effect when Week 12 begins Thursday and are backed by the threat of discipline for failure to comply.

Confirmed positive tests among NFL players and staff have increased alongside the rise in community spread across the country.

Bruce Arians Won't Take Over Offensive Playcalling

Nov 24, 2020 9:00 AM

Bruce Arians said after Monday night's loss to the Los Angeles Rams that he has no plans to take over offensive playcalling for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I thought [Byron Leftwich] called a good ballgame," Arians said. "We just have to execute better. When guys are open, we have to hit them and we can't misread coverage. We have to protect a little bit better when we do have guys deep and let [Tom Brady] hit that guy instead of having that pressure that cost us an interception. As a collective, everybody has got to play better."

The Buccaneers are 7-4 with the Kansas City Chiefs on deck before their Week 13 bye.

Contact tracing is complete and the only other player going on the reserve/COVID-19 list as a close contact is nose tackle Brandon Williams, who will have to quarantine for five days.

Mike McCarthy Inspired Cowboys With Gallagher Routine

Nov 24, 2020 8:48 AM

Desperate for a way to inspire the Dallas Cowboys, Mike McCarthy used a Gallagher routine and smashed a number of watermelons with a sledgehammer this past Saturday night.

A number of players also joined in as McCarthy looked to hammer home points of emphasis.

The Cowboys beat the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 on Sunday, snapping a four-game losing streak.

"It was just all part of the messaging," McCarthy said. "We had a number of points of emphasis that we were trying to hit, so a number of guys got to participate, and once again I'd say it was a lot of fun. It was well received."

Not only was the sledgehammer brought on the team plane -- "That's the beauty of flying charter," McCarthy said jokingly -- so were the watermelons.

"We had to actually take our own watermelons with us because it's a little harder to find big watermelons in Minneapolis this time of year than Dallas, from what I was told," he said. "So a lot of planning goes into that, and most importantly, we were able to get it done right and the cleanup was efficient. The hotel was a little concerned there."

Joe Burrow Tears ACL, MCL To Go With Other Structural Issues

Nov 23, 2020 2:09 PM

Joe Burrow tore his ACL, MCL and suffered other structural issues in his knee.

Burrow will miss the remainder of the 2020 season.

Burrow had a very promising rookie season after being the first overall pick of the draft. The Cincinnati Bengals had clear issues with their offensive line that put Burrow at risk throughout the season.

Carson Palmer similarly suffered a torn ACL and MCL early in his career with the Bengals.

JuJu Smith-Schuster Hurts Toe On Penalty Flag

Nov 23, 2020 9:33 AM

JuJu Smith-Schuster suffered a foot injury in the second half of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 27-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Smith-Schuster sustained the injury when he stepped on an officials' flag. He didn't return to the game, but it was reported that Smith-Schuster could have returned to the game if necessary.

Mike Tomlin said after the game that he did not consider Smith-Schuster's injury significant.

The Steelers have a short week with a Thanksgiving game against the Baltimore Ravens coming up.

Doug Pederson: Benching Carson Wentz Would Send Wrong Message

Nov 23, 2020 9:28 AM

Doug Pederson says the Philadelphia Eagles will stick with Carson Wentz for next week's game against the Seattle Seahawks despite the quarterback's struggles.

"If you get to that spot where you don't start him or you bench him, I think you're sending the wrong message to your football team that this season is over, and that's a bad message," Pederson said. "We have to work through this. When times get tough, sometimes that might be the easy thing to do.

"This sport is bigger than one guy. We all have a hand in it and we all have to fix it," he said.

Wentz finished 21-of-35 for 235 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns. The Eagles are 3-6-1 in the muddled NFC East.

"The media, you guys can ask whatever questions you want. I know that's part of the deal. I know it's always a scrutinized position, playing quarterback, and that's what I signed up for when I came out and played quarterback going back to high school. I can take it," Wentz said on questions about him being benched. "I can wear it. Are we playing as good as we can as a team? No. Am I playing my best football? No. There were some circumstances out there today that we left some plays out there on the field. We'll be critical, we'll go back and watch the tape.

"You guys can ask whatever questions you want, bring up whatever you want and for me, I'm just going to put my head down and go to work."

Frank Gore On Going 0-16: 'I Can't Go Out Like That'

Nov 23, 2020 9:23 AM

The New York Jets fell to 0-10 on Sunday, putting them in jeopardy of becoming just the third NFL team to have a winless season.

Frank Gore, 37, doesn't know if he'll play next season and wants to make sure he doesn't end his career with an 0-16 mark.

"You don't want to go 0-16, especially if this is my last year," he said. "I can't go out like that.

"Hopefully, we can get one. And I can't wait until we get it. I'll be so happy. If it is my last year, I can't say I'm going out 0-16."

Gore has 15,794 yards, trailing only Walter Payton (16,726) and Emmitt Smith (18,355) on the all-time list.

Tua Tagovailoa Remains Miami's Starter Despite Benching

Nov 23, 2020 9:19 AM

Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced Tua Tagovailoa in the fourth quarter of the Miami Dolphins' 20-13 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, but the rookie remains the starting quarterback.

Brian Flores made it clear after the game that there will be no wholesale changes at quarterback.

"Tua wasn't injured. We just felt like it was the best move at that point of the game. We had to get in two-minute mode, and we felt like [Fitzpatrick] gave us the best chance to win the game, and we had an opportunity at the end to tie it," Flores said.

The Dolphins trailed 20-10 when Tagovailoa was benched, with Flores saying the team needed a spark.
