Ranking The NFL's Oldest, Youngest Starters By Team

Oct 31, 2014 2:22 PM

The Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens have the three oldest collections of starters in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals are the youngest.

Former Vikings head coach Bud Grant had a popular saying that "for every young guy you start, you lose a game."

Pete Carroll worked for Grant early in his coaching career, but has had one of the youngest teams in the NFL during his tenure with the Seahawks.

"I was of that mindset in classic fashion until I had to be in charge of calling all the shots and then it just flipped in me that we don't know where we're going unless we find these guys out," Carroll said. "One of the really exciting things about playing guys early is ... by the middle and to the end of the season, you’ve developed players that fit into your rotations now that add to your depth and also add to the opportunity to not over-play your older guys."

Below is a full list with the rank in offense/defense in parenthesis.

1. Atlanta Falcons (2/5)
2. San Diego Chargers (7/3)
3. Baltimore Ravens (1/15)
4. Chicago Bears (11/4)
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (25/1)
6. New York Jets (23/2)
7. New York Giants (9/2)
8. Detroit Lions (3/20)
9. New Orleans Saints (6/13)
10. San Francisco 49ers (8/8)
11. Denver Broncos (14/7)

Seahawks Encouraged By Bruce Irvin's Development

Jul 28, 2014 5:56 PM

Bruce Irvin hasn't recorded a single tackle or sack during his first three preseason games with the Seattle Seahawks.

"He's grown in big ways here already," Pete Carroll said. "Hopefully we'll see this week. I won't be surprised at all if he has some real quality rushes. In the game last week, if you go back, he really was close enough to have four sacks in the game."

Irvin was the 15th overall pick by the Seahawks in the 2012 NFL Draft.

"Bruce was the most productive guy in practice throughout the camp," Carroll said. "We keep score of that stuff, and he was the highest-ranked guy in terms of productivity. That's in sacks and tackles for losses and knocking balls loose and all that stuff."

Carroll Praises Owens For Time With Seahawks

Nov 6, 2014 12:21 PM

The Seahawks cut Terrell Owens last week, but they didn't make the move because of his famous personality.

"Anybody that thinks he had an attitude around here or something like that got in the way is wrong," Pete Carroll said. "They don't know what they're talking about.

"This guy was great. He did everything we wanted him to do. He practiced hard, he studied hard, he asked questions, he worked hard in the games. He did everything. He was terrific."

Carroll said Owens was let go because younger receivers on the roster were a better fit.

Contracts Made It Easy For Seahawks To Go With Wilson Over Flynn

Jul 29, 2014 5:59 PM

There was some shock when the Seahawks decided to go with rookie Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback over free agent addition Matt Flynn.

The belief was that Seattle spent a lot of money on Flynn, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out that they really didn't.

Flynn received a signing bonus of $6 million and a guaranteed base salary of $2 million in 2012. Next season, Flynn has another fully guaranteed $2 million but a non-guaranteed total salary of $5.25 million.

In today's quarterback market, that isn't an excessive amount for a backup, especially when your starter is untested.

Seahawks Name Rookie Wilson Starting Quarterback

Oct 31, 2014 11:44 AM

The Seahawks will start Russell Wilson at quarterback in Week 1 against the Cardinals.

Seattle drafted Wilson in the third round. He has battled free agent addition Matt Flynn and incumbent Tarvaris Jackson, who has reportedly been traded to the Bills.

"It's been a very exciting competition that has gone on, and Russell has taken full advantage of his opportunities and has done everything that we have asked for on the field and more than what you guys could know off the field in meeting rooms and with our players and how he's represented. He's earned this job," Pete Carroll said.

"It was a legitimate competition as we said from the beginning, and with the opportunity he's taken advantage of he deserves to start."
