Alexander To Leave Team For Funeral, Slated To Start Sunday

Nov 18, 2014 7:45 AM

Seattle Seahawks runner Shaun Alexander will leave the team Thursday to attend a family funeral in Cincinnati, but will return in time for Sunday's regular-season finale at Green Bay -- and perhaps a touchdown record. Alexander tied Priest Holmes' NFL record of 27 touchdowns in a season in Saturday's win over Indianapolis. He also has a career-high and Seahawks' record 1,807 yards rushing and is closing in on his first league rushing title. He leads Tiki Barber of the New York Giants by 150 yards entering this weekend's finales. Alexander missed the rushing crown by 1 yard last season. Coach Mike Holmgren said he would substitute his starters "pretty liberally" throughout Sunday's game. Asked if he would put Alexander back into the game if he still needed a touchdown, the coach shook his head and said, "I don't know. Let me think about that a little." "I want him to get the record. We all want him to get the record," Holmgren said. "The most important thing is we have our guys healthy for the playoffs. So if the situation comes up I am going to have to make a decision at the time -- just like whether to go for it on fourth down or not," he said.

Alexander Ties NFL TD Record

Aug 6, 2014 4:49 AM

With his third touchdown of the evening, Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander tied the all-time NFL touchdown record set by Chiefs' running back Priest Holmes at 27. The 27th came under a silent Holmgren protest with the game in hand and the Seahawks facing a first and 1 off of a Craig Terrell interception. "Mike had just come up to me when the defense was on the field and told me that if they get under five minutes to go, your game is over," Alexander said. "I said, OK. Right at the time he turns around and Craig Terrell (a Seahawks defensive tackle) intercepts a pass with 5:27 on the clock. I was saying, 'Yeah.' Then [backfield coach] Stump Mitchell tells me that we're done and there's no more hits. I told him that no matter what, I'm going to do what they do." "I'm just laughing," Alexander said. "Coach turns around and said, 'I'm giving you one play to score, and if you get hit and get hurt and go to the hospital, I'm not visiting you.' I said Okay." "We were all very aware of how close he is to the touchdown record," Holmgren said. "He's had a great year. He's done everything we've asked him to do and more. I didn't want him to miss out if I could help it like he did last year. Last year no one wanted that to happen to miss the rushing title by a yard. I just didn't want that to happen again."

Seattle Loses Sharper For The Season

Aug 6, 2014 3:33 AM

The NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks have placed linebacker Jamie Sharper on injured reserve, ending his season. Sharper, a nine-year veteran who signed with the Seahawks as a free agent in April, started the first eight games this season before being sidelined by a staph infection in his right knee. The Seahawks replaced Sharper on the roster by activating cornerback Mike Harden from the practice squad. Sharper signed a $17.5 million, five-year contract, with a $1.5 million signing bonus with Seattle after being released by the Houston Texans. He was with the Texans for three seasons after playing five seasons with Baltimore.
