Earl Thomas 'Caught Between' Retirement, Return In 2017

Dec 21, 2016 4:56 PM

Earl Thomas publicly stated he will consider retirement in the hours that followed his season-ending broken leg.

While a few weeks have passed, Thomas says his mind is still in a similar place.

“Yeah, I’m kind of enjoying just waking up in the morning without the pressure,” Thomas said. “Peace is starting to return to me, bro, and I think that’s my ultimate goal in life. I just want to have peace. But I can say when I went back to the [Seahawks practice facility] the other day, my competitive juices came right back. I don’t know, man. I’m kind of caught in between right now. … I’m never going to step on a football field half-heartedly. When I go out there, I want to be out there with my balls hanging — don’t want to say my balls hanging, but just — no fear, that’s a better way to say it. But if I have any doubts, I don’t want to play the game.”

Before the season started, ESPN's Bill Barnwell gave Thomas a 95 percent chance of making the Hall of Fame as he had already had five Pro Bowls and three first-team All-Pro before turning 27.

Only Steelers Rank In Top-10 In Offense, Defense DVOA (Infographic)

Dec 21, 2016 10:38 AM

The NFL has very teams this season that excel in all facets of the game. Further evidence of this issue shows itself in the fact that there is only one team ranking in the top-10 in both Football Outsiders' Offensive and Defensive DVOA: the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are 9-5 after winning five straight games and must beat the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16 to ensure their place in the playoffs. Pittsburgh ranks third in total DVOA and first in Weighted DVOA.

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs ranked in the top-10 on both sides of the ball. The Chiefs are the closest team to joining the Steelers in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive DVOA at 13th and 12th.

The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots rank first and second overall in DVOA as they rank second and third, respectively in Offensive DVOA but 20th and 19th in Defensive DVOA. The Atlanta Falcons rank first in Offensive DVOA, 27th in Defensive and fourth overall. The Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders have similar splits as the Cowboys and Patriots, while the Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants are the inverse of those teams with top-5 defenses and offenses below the NFL mean.

Richard Sherman Threatens To 'Ruin' Reporter's Career

Dec 21, 2016 8:19 AM

Richard Sherman threatened to "ruin" a local reporter's career after "a couple of tough questions," according to another reporter.

The incident occurred when Jim Moore of 710 ESPN asked Sherman about his nationally televised sideline blowup at offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell during last Thursday's win over the Los Angeles Rams.

According to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, Moore "told Sherman that he didn't understand that Bevell is trying to call plays he thinks will work but that Sherman thinks he has a 'better handle' of what should be called."

"No," Sherman told Moore, saying: "I just had a -- we had a -- prior experience (the Super Bowl) so we talked about that. But let me guess -- you have a better play to call. Let me guess, you have a better experience."

When Moore responded "no," Sherman told him: "Then you should probably kind of stop."

The All-Pro defender then passed Moore on his way back to the locker room and told the reporter: "You don't want to go there. You do not. I'll ruin your career."

Per Condotta, Moore asked Sherman: "You'll ruin my career? How are you going to do that?"

"I'll make sure you don't get your media pass anymore," Sherman said.

"Is that right?" Moore asked.

"Yes, it is," Sherman said.

Sherman later apologized for the incident on Twitter.

Richard Sherman Upset With Seattle's Goal-Line Pass Call

Dec 16, 2016 10:09 AM

Richard Sherman wasn't happy that Pete Carroll called for Russell Wilson to throw the football on first-and-goal from the 1-yard line on Thursday night.

Wilson targeted Jimmy Graham on the play.

Sherman engaged in a shouting match with members of the coaching staff on the sideline.

"I'm upset about us throwing from the 1," Sherman said afterward. "I'd rather do what most teams would do, making a conscientious decision to run the ball."

Sherman said he was initially talking to Pete Carroll on the sideline, but then Darrell Bevell got involved.

"Yeah, I was letting [Carroll] know. We've already seen how that goes," Sherman said, alluding to the Seahawks' Super Bowl XLIX loss to the New England Patriots, which ended on a Wilson interception in a similar situation.

"I'm sure you guys have seen that play enough times," Sherman said.

Seahawks Don't Expect Earl Thomas To Retire

Dec 8, 2016 11:04 PM

The Seattle Seahawks expect Earl Thomas to resume his playing career next season despite openly talking about contemplating retirement following his season-ending broken tibia.

“Absolutely. He loves to play this game, there’s no doubt," said defensive coordinator Kris Richard. "Of course we’re all disappointed. I know he is. He’s not getting a chance to do what he loves to do. I certainly hope so because the game is better with him out there playing.”

Pete Carroll and teammate Richard Sherman on Wednesday also each said they expect Thomas back in 2017.

Earl Thomas Suffers Broken Leg, Out At Least Six Weeks

Dec 6, 2016 1:15 AM

Earl Thomas broke his leg during Sunday night's 40-7 blowout win over the Carolina Panthers and will be out at least six weeks.

"He broke his leg tonight so I don't know what that means, but it's always six weeks anyway," Carroll said. "I don't know how severe it is, but it's very unfortunate. He ran into Kam [Chancellor], and Kam's made of steel, so that's going to hurt, and it sure did."

Members of the Seahawks medical training staff carried Thomas off the field so he wouldn't have to put weight on his left leg. He was later taken off the field on a cart.

During the game, Thomas tweeted that he had "no regrets," but that there was a lot running through his mind, "including retirement."

"We all talked to him. He's in good spirits," said cornerback Richard Sherman. "He's a strong-willed dude, so he'll be fine.

"All of us consider retirement just about every game. And when you get an injury like that, a lot of stuff goes through your mind. ...I would think it's a little bit of an exaggeration."

Earl Thomas Watched Seahawks' Game In Disguise At Buffalo Wild Wings

Dec 5, 2016 9:26 AM

Earl Thomas missed his first football game since high school when he sat out the Seattle Seahawks' loss at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week with a hamstring injury.

“It was definitely hard,” said Thomas.

Thomas took his wife, daughter and brother to Portland to watch the Blazers.

Thomas said watching NBA games “kept my competitive spirit going” during what he called “a tough time. Very emotional.”

Thomas also watched the Seahawks' game in disguise at a Buffalo Wild Wings during his Portland trip.

Thomas said he tried to keep his emotions in check but that proved almost as hard as not playing.

“I was into it,” he said. “You can’t be silent. You can’t hide when you are openly passionate about something like this. People knew who I was but they kind of let me be. But it was definitely hard watching it.”

Richard Sherman: Cam Newton Missing Playoffs Is Karmic Payback

Dec 1, 2016 8:52 AM

Richard Sherman says the Carolina Panthers' struggles this season are karmic payback for how Cam Newton acted after the Panthers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round of last year's playoffs.

Newton ran around Bank of America Stadium high-fiving fans after that victory, but when a Seattle fan dangled a "12" flag near the quarterback, he grabbed it, crumpled it up and tossed it.

"Yeah, he probably did," Sherman said when asked if Newton crossed the line. "I guess karma gets you. It doesn't look like you're going to be in the playoffs this year."

Carolina is in last place in the NFC South with a 4-7 record.
