Sources: Commanders Plan To Release G Andrew Norwell

May 31, 2023 8:34 AM

The Washington Commanders placed guard Andrew Norwell on the reserve/physically unable to perform list Tuesday.

They intend to eventually release him.

Multiple sources have said in the past two months that Washington plans to release Norwell once he's able to pass a physical. He's dealing with a right elbow injury that has lingered all offseason.

Washington would save $2.28 million if he's released before Thursday -- and does not receive a post-June 1 designation.

The Commanders could save $4.38 million against this year's salary cap with a post-June 1 designation.

'Washington Commanders' Trademark Denied By USPTO

May 25, 2023 9:02 AM

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has denied an application to trademark the "Washington Commanders" name.

The application was denied for two reasons. The first was due to "likelihood of confusion" with the "Commanders' Classic" -- a yearly college football game between Air Force and Army -- already trademarked.

The other stems from a pending application by Martin McCaulay, a D.C. area man who filed trademarks trying to guess the new team name.

Washington began its name-change process back in July of 2020 when it decided to retire the "Redskins" nickname, which had been associated with the team since 1933.

Ron Rivera: Chase Young 'Understands' Decision On Option

May 25, 2023 8:50 AM

Ron Rivera says Chase Young understands why the Washington Commanders failed to pick up his fifth-year option.

The defensive end was eligible for an extension that would have paid him $17.452 million.

Rivera said earlier this offseason that he wondered whether not picking it up would motivate Young, the No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft. Young suffered a torn right ACL and a ruptured patellar tendon in 2021.

"He gets it, he understands," Rivera said of the fifth-year option. "He'll come in and give everything he's got."

Saints, Commanders Flipped Vote, Leading To TNF Flexing

May 23, 2023 8:58 AM

The NFL has gained the ability to flex late-season Thursday Night Football games thanks in part to the New Orleans Saints and Washington Commanders.

The Saints and Commanders flipped their votes from "no" to "yes" and the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos moved from "abstain" to "yes," giving the league the 24 "yes" votes it needed to activate flexing.

It's unclear why New Orleans and Washington changed their positions from "no" to "yes."

Commanders Unlikely To Face Punishment For Contacting Andrew Luck

May 22, 2023 7:13 AM

The Washington Commanders are "unlikely" to face punishment for contacting Andrew Luck, according to a report.

The report explains that "there probably is 'not enough hard evidence' of impermissible contact" for a penalty to be imposed.

The Commanders reportedly reached out to Luck in 2022 when they were searching high and low for a solution at quarterback.

Luck retired with years remaining on his contract, leaving the Indianapolis Colts in control of any possible return to football.

NFL Owners Won't Vote On Commanders Sale In May

May 19, 2023 9:31 AM

League owners will not vote on the Washington Commanders sale during their meetings next week in Minnesota, according to an NFL official.

Dan and Tanya Snyder reached a purchase and sale agreement for the Commanders with a group led by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils co-owner Josh Harris last week.

While a vote this month was considered unlikely, Jeff Miller, the NFL's executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy, said there would be no vote when owners convene in Minneapolis on Sunday and Monday.

"The league staff and finance committee will continue to review the details of the transaction," Miller said. "We will provide membership with an update in Minnesota."

Colts Ask NFL To Review Commanders Possible Tampering With Andrew Luck

May 9, 2023 8:38 AM

The Indianapolis Colts have requested that NFL officials look into the possibility of improper contact between the Washington Commanders and Andrew Luck, according to a source.

Luck retired in 2019 with three seasons remaining on his contract. The contract tolled after his departure, meaning that if he were to resume his career, he would remain under contract to the Colts, and any improper contact by another club could constitute a violation of the league's tampering rules.

A Commanders source told ESPN's John Keim on Monday that the team considered Luck, among many other quarterbacks in 2022, but moved on because it figured he would stay retired, so it didn't go any further.

May 3, 2023 8:15 AM

The NFL is exploring the possibility of providing "conditional approval" to the $6.05 billion bid made by Josh Harris to purchase the Washington Commanders, according to the Washington Post.

The Post called this approach "atypical."

The NFL is reportedly "engaged in discussions" with Daniel Snyder's representatives regarding the move.
