Commanders Fire DC Jack Del Rio After Blowout Loss

Nov 24, 2023 12:11 PM

The Commanders have fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, coach Ron Rivera announced Friday, as the Washington defense has plummeted to the bottom of the NFL rankings after entering the season with high expectations.

The Commanders (4-8) have lost three in a row -- including their 45-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday -- and eight of the past 10. They had hoped the defense would be a consistent force, given how many new options they had on offense. But instead the defense became an albatross.

As the losses mounted, so did pressure for the organization to make a move.

Ron Rivera 'Not Worried' About Job Status After Loss

Nov 24, 2023 8:45 AM

The Washington Commanders have lost eight of their last 10 games after Thursday's 45-10 drubbing from the Dallas Cowboys.

Speculation has once again turned to the job security of Ron Rivera and his coaching staff.

"I've told you before I'm not worried about anything," Rivera said. "All I'm going to do is do my job and see how things go. That's the only thing I can do."

Multiple players said they're not focused on the coaches fate.

"It's only when you guys ask," left tackle Charles Leno, Jr. said. "No one else is bringing this s---- up. We don't talk about this s----; we don't care about this stuff, we're listening to our coaches following game plan and trying to win games."

Nov 13, 2023 12:48 AM

Jason Myers sent the Seattle Seahawks to a 29-26 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Lumen Field when he hit a 43-yard field goal in the final seconds.

That kick also sent Week 10 of the NFL season into the record books.

The Seahawks' win over Washington was the fifth game of the day that was decided on a made field goal as time expired, joining the Cleveland Browns over the Baltimore Ravens, the Houston Texans over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Arizona Cardinals over the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Chase Young Trade Completed After Commanders Lowered Asking Price

Nov 12, 2023 11:46 AM

The 49ers went looking for big names at the NFL trade deadline, checking on the availability of Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson and then-Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat, among others, sources told ESPN.

The cost of all three players ultimately turned out to be too high for the 49ers, who thought that they wouldn't be able to make a deal to improve their team with just hours remaining before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Oct. 31.

The Commanders, however, lowered their asking price for defensive end Chase Young after some teams expressed medical concerns about him, according to sources.

Chase Young 'Wasn't Mad' About Trade To Niners

Nov 7, 2023 7:59 AM

Chase Young hasn't been with the San Francisco 49ers for a week, but he's already embracing his new home.

The Niners traded a compensatory third-round pick to the Washington Commanders for Young last Tuesday.

"I wasn't mad," Young said of his first reaction to the trade. "Nick [Bosa] is here, always been a big brother to me. ... Got in here last week, just the culture, the vibe is a lot different. I definitely know that I'm in the building with winners."

Young didn't direct any anger at his former team for trading him.

"I know who I am," Young said. "I'm a competitor. So I'm going to compete. I don't know what they're doing over there [in Washington]. That's over my head. I'm just going to be Chase Young and I'm going to compete to the best that I can."

Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Sam Howell Is Our Future

Nov 6, 2023 8:28 AM

Washington Commanders defensive end Jonathan Allen is convinced the team has found their quarterback of the future.

"Sam Howell is our future," Allen said. "He's our quarterback. I feel like we found our quarterback for the next 5-10 years, and I truly believe that. When I look at the plays he makes on the field, and not only does he make great plays on the field, but his demeanor after bad plays and not playing well. He is always able to bounce back. ... I've seen a lot of great quarterbacks in my time, played against a lot of them and feel he has the potential to be one of them. I can truly say this team is behind Sam Howell 100 percent."

The Commanders trailed 17-10 in the third quarter on Sunday, but Howell rallied the team for a 20-17 win over the New England Patriots.

Howell threw an interception in the end zone to end the first half, but was 29-of-44 for 325 yards and a touchdown over the rest of the game.

Ron Rivera Sees 'Opportunity' For Other Players Following Trades

Nov 2, 2023 9:59 AM

The Washington Commanders traded away two of their top talents on Tuesday, but they insist they aren't punting on their season.

One day after trading defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young, Ron Rivera said, "We have an opportunity to go out and play well. I do think there's every opportunity in front of us. ... It's an opportunity to see what else we have. It's an opportunity to go out and win football games using different guys."

The Commanders, though, have lost five of their last six games entering Sunday's game at the New England Patriots.

Washington traded both pending free agents for draft picks. Sweat and Young had combined for 11.5 sacks this season, putting each one on pace for their career best total.
