Cousins: Washington Remains Griffin's Team

Dec 15, 2014 4:18 PM

Kirk Cousins has been impressive filling in for Robert Griffin III and clearly wants the starting quarterback job for Washington.

But Cousins also knows that Washington remains Griffin's team.

"That's a great question," Cousins told reporters Tuesday. "It's a tough dynamic to fully answer. As a quarterback, if there's any doubt in the other 10 guys in the huddle looking at me, 'Can this guy get it done for us? Can he move the ball?' Then I already failed. When I say this is Robert's team, I don't mean I can't step in and have authority and make sure we move the football. But I won't change the statement that this is Robert's team. I stand by that."

Cousins is realistic about the situation.

"Robert was drafted high for a reason," he said. "He's had success here, he's done a lot of good things and he's done nothing to have that be any different. So this is his team and it's my job as a backup on this team to hopefully, when he comes back, to give him a team with a good record and put him in a good spot to have success down the stretch. By no means that does that say I can't go in there as a backup and get the job done."

Griffin Didn't Suffer Fractured Ankle

Oct 6, 2014 10:37 PM

Robert Griffin III said that an MRI on his injured ankle indicates that he did not suffer a fracture and he does not believe he will need surgery.

But Griffin is in a cast and is on crutches so his prognosis remains unclear.

Kirk Cousins also played well in the absence of Griffin.

Gruden Was Favoring Cousins Over Griffin Privately Before Injury

Oct 15, 2014 5:12 PM

Jay Gruden privately expressed a belief to confidants before Robert Griffin III's dislocated ankle injury that Kirk Cousins would be better suited to run his offense.

Gruden can't publicly express those sentiments due to the support Griffin has within the Washington organization.

The mood in the Washington locker room was jubilent following their 41-10 win without seeming to be concerned that their franchise quarterback left the game with a serious injury.

“We’re sick about it, but now we have to move forward,” Gruden said. “That’s what you do in the NFL when people go down, you have to have good backup plans. That’s why Kirk is here. We feel very strongly about his role as a quarterback.”

A few minutes later he added: “I feel like we can win any game with Kirk Cousins . . . Kirk is a special guy. He started four games last year and didn’t have great success, but obviously has a skill set that I feel like is very much suited for what we do. He can handle it mentally, and obviously, physically. I feel that he can make every throw in the book and we are going to move forward with Kirk.”

Robert Griffin III Out Indefinitely With Dislocated Ankle

Nov 2, 2014 10:06 PM

Robert Griffin III suffered a dislocated ankle in the first half of Washington's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and is out indefinitely.

Griffin suffered the injury while rolling to his right toward the sideline in the first quarter. Although he was not touched on the play, Griffin fell awkwardly out of bounds and was carted to the locker room.

After his leg was placed in a splint, Griffin waved, saluted and gave a thumbs-up signal to the crowd as he was carted along the sideline and down the players' tunnel.

FCC Finds Redskins' Name 'Offense', 'Derogatory'

Oct 6, 2014 11:20 PM

The head of the Federal Communications Commission says the Washington Redskins nickname is "offensive and derogatory."

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler told Broadcasting & Cable that he hopes Dan Snyder will change the name without any formal action from the regulatory body.

Said Wheeler: "I don't use the term personally and I think it is offensive and derogatory. ... I am a Civil War buff, and there were a lot of terms that were appropriate at that time that aren't appropriate anymore."
