Gruden: I'm Going To Let RG3 Be Himself

Nov 30, 2014 7:30 PM

Jay Gruden has a plan in mind in developing Robert Griffin III as he enters his third season in the NFL.

“I worked with Andy Dalton for three years in Cincinnati, and built a foundation of concepts and protections that I think worked well with him,” Gruden said. “With Robert, we’ll obviously use his skill set differently. When it comes to the quarterback position, my job is to make him comfortable and productive. I’m not going to try to turn RG3 into Andy Dalton or Drew Brees. He isn’t them. They’re not him. I would be foolish to try to turn RG3 into a pocket passer. It would be foolish. The way he is as a runner, we have to take advantage of that. He strikes fear into defensive coordinators when he runs outside. I’m going to let him be himself.”

Griffin seemed to be worn down by his working relationship with Mike Shanahan.

"Great decision," said Griffin to ESPN's Rick Reilly. "Fresh start. Can't wait."

Report: Griffin Bragged To Teammates About Relationship With Snyder

Aug 6, 2014 2:47 PM

Robert Griffin III had an outstanding rookie season with the Washington Redskins, but struggled to return from major knee surgery amid strained relations with Mike Shanahan.

Griffin's close relationship with owner Daniel Snyder also appears to be an issue in the locker room.

"But according to insiders, Griffin’s public campaign to have the offense altered for him was just the tip of his egotism in his second year," writes Jenkins. "Behind closed doors, Griffin had fierce finger-pointing tensions with his wide receivers, and he bragged to teammates that he could procure favors from the owner and influence the franchise’s direction.
