Belichick, Carroll, Payton Considered Best HC's In NFL By Peers

Sep 3, 2014 11:09 PM

Bill Belichick is ranked as the best coach in the NFL, according to a poll of 30 league insiders.

Pete Carroll and Sean Payton are ranked second and third and are also in their first tier.

"The most important thing to me is the ability to control the offense, the defense and the special teams," a GM said in describing the ideal coach. "You can change and you can coach multiple things and you have the ability to teach almost every position group. Then you can lose any coach you want and replace from within because the head coach is the talent. Belichick is the ultimate model of that."

Belichick commmanded a 1 vote on 28 of 30 ballots.

In Tier 2 are Andy Reid at No. 4, Tom Coughlin at No. 5, Mike McCarthy and Mike Tomlin at No. 6, Jim Harbaugh at No. 8, John Harbaugh at No. 9, John Fox at No. 10 , Jeff Fisher at No. 11, Chip Kelly at No. 12, Bruce Arians at No. 13, Lovie Smith at No. 14 and Mavin Lewis at No. 15.

Tier 3 is led by Chuck Pagano At No. 16, followed by Rex Ryan (17), Mike Smith (18), Gus Bradley (19), Ken Whisenhunt (20), Mike McCoy (20), Marc Trestman (22) and Ron Rivera (23).

Tier 4 features Mike Zimmer (24), Jay Gruden (25), Bill O'Brien (26), Jim Caldwell (27), Doug Marrone (28), Joe Philbin (29), Jason Garrett (30), Mike Pettine (31) and Bruce Allen (32).

Griffin Dares Critics To Keep Doubting Him

Sep 3, 2014 5:02 AM

Robert Griffin III is daring people to doubt his abilities and that he is accustomed to dealing with it.

"They doubted in High School
They doubted a turnaround at @Baylor
They doubted a Heisman was possible
Keep doubting. It's nothing New," wrote Griffin on Twitter.

Griffin did not say his Tweet was in response to any one thing.

"I said what I needed to say, there's no need to look into it," Griffin said Thursday. "It's right there on Facebook, it's on Instagram, it's on Twitter. It is what I believe and what our household deems necessary to go out every day and be successful. That's all I've got to say."

Mike Carey Asked NFL To Not Assign Him To Washington Games In 2006

Sep 28, 2014 9:23 AM

Longtime referee Mike Carey quietly asked the NFL not to assign him to any games involving the Washington Redskins dating back to 2006.

“The league respectfully honored my request not to officiate Washington,” Carey said. “It happened sometime after I refereed their playoff game in 2006, I think.”

Carey said he's found the name offensive throughout his life.

“It just became clear to me that to be in the middle of the field, where something disrespectful is happening, was probably not the best thing for me,” Carey said.

Carey said he never went to Commissioner Roger Goodell with the request, instead preferring to communicate with the person who makes up the officiating assignments.

Johnny Manziel Flips Off Redskins' Bench

Sep 28, 2014 4:08 AM

Johnny Manziel gave the Washington Redskins the middle finger after a third quarter incompletion during a 24-23 preseason loss by the Cleveland Browns.

Manziel flipped the bird toward the Redskins after the play that unfolded in front of Washington's bench.

Manziel said he had "words exchanged" with the Redskins and that he should have been smarter.

"I felt like I did a good job of holding my composure throughout the night, and you have a lapse of judgment and slip up," Manziel said.

Asked in his postgame news conference if he thought it was wrong, Manziel smiled before laughing.

"I mean, I didn't think it was a positive," Manziel said.

The NFL no doubt will review the tape, and Manziel will be subject to an $11,025 fine.

Griffin: I Want To Be The Greatest

Sep 15, 2014 3:57 PM

Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins' offense has looked inconsistent in camp.

But Griffin likes having more responsibility in Jay Gruden's passing system.

“I don’t think anything they’re asking us to do is too much or too heavy for us,” Griffin said. “I like to think I can hold a lot of weight on my shoulders, as a quarterback, as a leader of the team. That’s the way it goes. That’s what the greats do and I want to be the greatest.”

Griffin has the power to audible in Gruden’s system, something he didn’t have the past two years.

“It’s a quarterback’s dream you want to have control at the line,” Griffin said, “to get out of things and to protect yourself in protection. I enjoy it. It’s fun.”

Kirk Cousins Seen By Some As Best QB On Redskins' Roster

Sep 1, 2014 8:46 PM

Robert Griffin III struggled in joint practices this week against the New England Patriots. Some members of the Patriots' organization believe that Kirk Cousins is the best quarterback on the Redskins' roster.

Cousins' edge is in "running the offense, fine-tuned mechanics and how decisively the ball came out of his hand."

There is now quarterback controversy, however, with who will start for the Redskins this season.

"He'll do some things, I know, on game day," Jay Gruden said. "He'll jump around, make six guys miss, throw a bomb for a touchdown, and I'm sure I'll high-five him. But if he does it again and it's a 12-yard sack-fumble, then what do you do? You gotta take the good with the bad, but we're trying to eliminate the absolute negative plays, the sack plays, and play situational football a little bit better."
