GM: Too Many Rushed Judgments For The Elite Young QBs

Nov 25, 2014 1:02 PM

At various points over the past year, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III have taken the mantle as the best young quarterback in the NFL.

The viewpoints in the media seem to be largely based on wins and losses.

"I think it is unfair to these guys almost to keep their stock report based on wins and losses or what they did last week," a general manager said recently.

Wilson is only trailing Peyton Manning in passer rating and QBR since Week 8 of last season.

"I think Luck is ahead of the others," the GM said. "Russell will never be able to close the gap on that one. Part of it is, just genetically, he cannot see over the line sometimes. But all these guys have strengths and weaknesses. Kaepernick is still about the same guy from last year, but last year he made big plays running. It naturally becomes an emotional assessment of these guys. All these guys are young. I always laugh when a guy is a year-and-a-half in and we're like, 'Is it time?' Really? You're going to make a change? Everyone will go through a slump."

Brooks: Griffin Shouldn't Be Playing Right Now

Jul 2, 2014 1:44 AM

Robert Griffin III is struggling and some believe he's not fully recovered from his ACL injury.

"He's obviously a man and he makes his own decisions, but I personally don't feel he should be playing right now," Ahmad Brooks said.

Griffin threw for just 127 yards on 17-for-27 shooting with one interceptions and four sacks agains the San Francisco 49ers.

"He's a man, he has the heart of a warrior and is going to go out there and play regardless of the circumstance," Brooks told CSN Washington. "Everybody can see it. Everybody can see it. He shouldn't be playing."

Shanahan Denies Report Of Griffin Asking For Bad Plays Not To Be Shown

Jul 2, 2014 1:38 AM

Mike Shanahan denied a report from the NFL Network that Robert Griffin III requested the Washington Redskins' coaching staff not show negative plays of him during film review.

“That’s completely false. Robert would never do that,” said Shanahan.

Griffin created controversy last week when saying that it seemed as though the Philadelphia Eagles knew what was coming from the Redskins' offense.

Redskins Hope End Of Cap Penalties Will Lead To 2014 Improvement

Oct 18, 2014 4:39 AM

Mike Shanahan believes the Washington Redskins will have an opportunity to improve this offseason with the end of cap penalties over the past two seasons coming to an end.

Shanahan has a 24-34 record as head coach of the Redskins.

“I think when you take a look at the offensive numbers … that just doesn’t happen naturally with a lot of new players. We talked about it last year. We had six new players on our team, and putting up the numbers that we’re putting up are pretty impressive, especially with losing the $36 million salary cap over those two years time frame,” Shanahan said. “You don’t have the type of depth. But you’re able to put a very solid football team together. And in the future, it will get better because we do have the ability to get more depth. We’ve got the ability to add some players on both sides of the football, and that gives you a chance to get better as a football team.”

RGIII: Eagles Knew What Was Coming

Oct 16, 2014 6:38 AM

The Washington Redskins struggled with their passing game for most of their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

The Redskins adjusted by going with a run-heavy attack, rushing 28 times against seven throws in the first half.

“They did a good job of scheming us up,” Robert Griffin said. “They kind of knew what was coming before it was coming and that was disheartening. But like I told the guys, regardless of what’s going on out there, we’re the players and we have to make the plays work, and we just weren’t doing that in the first half.”

Griffin doesn't necessarily believe that the Redskins' offense has become predictable as a whole.

“I don’t think it has become predictable,” he said. “DeMeco Ryans is a good linebacker and they do good things with him and the other guy – Najee Goode. They allowed DeMeco to play the pass first. A lot of times, we were trying to hit those [play-action] holes behind him and he can run to those holes. I think on the back, they did a good job of running to those holes as well – kind of scheming stuff and knowing what type of hole we’re trying to hit on those three level holes, or whatever you might want to call it. I don’t think we’ve become predictable. I just think they had the right call in the right situation and they lucked into some pretty good recoveries.”

Redskins Want RG3 To Be RG3, Not Peyton Manning

May 26, 2014 3:58 AM

The Washington Redskins believe Robert Griffin III can be a great pocket passer, but they don't want him to emulate Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

“Robert’s a great player,” Kyle Shanahan said this week when asked about Griffin as a pocket passer. “He was a great college player and he’s a great NFL player. I want Robert to be Robert and I don’t want him to be Peyton Manning. I want him to be Robert. What’s good about Robert is he’s capable of having qualities like Peyton Manning. He can be a great passer. He already is a good thrower. He is at times really good in the pass game. But he hasn’t had those reps since he was 6 years old like somebody like Peyton has.

“Robert’s always been able to run. He’s always been able to get away from trouble. And when you can do that your entire life and make plays, you don’t have to sit in there as much and throw. But Robert’s more than capable of being it. He’s more than capable of being a great thrower. And the more he works at that, he can be as well rounded and have more weapons than anybody does.”

Griffin Knows He Needs To Reduce Hits

Nov 27, 2014 9:12 AM

Robert Griffin III took 18 hits last week against the Minnesota Vikings, one week after the Denver Broncos also pounded him.

“Bottom line, I can’t take those amount of hits,” Griffin said. “You don’t want to be hit that much. A lot of great quarterbacks don’t get hit that much. It’s not just me, it’s a lot of things that go into that. We just have to get better.”

The Vikings applied pressure up the middle last week.

"We have to improve there and make sure we keep our quarterback upright,” Griffin said. “It takes all of us. Yeah, I’ve been hit a bunch [recently] and everyone knows it, but you have to move on and make each game a new game and not worry what happened before.”
