The Washington Redskins have fired Mike Shanahan after posting a 24-40 record over four seasons.

"Redskins fans deserve a better result," owner Dan Snyder said in a statement released by the team. "We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs."

"When we first came here, we knew we were in some tough situations relative to the salary cap," Shanahan said. "When we first came in as a staff, we knew we had to make tough decisions."

The Redskins are expected to fire head coach Mike Shanahan following Sunday's season finale against the Giants, sources confirmed to ESPN.

It is unclear whether Shanahan will be fired Sunday night or Monday, according to the sources.

The NFL announced the rosters for the 2014 Pro Bowl, which is "Unconferenced" for the the first time.

Mike Shanahan believes the Washington Redskins could parlay Kirk Cousins into a first round pick if he performs well during the final three games of the season.

“If he lights it up, hey, maybe we can bring a first-round draft choice back to this organization, and say hey, who are we gonna take in the first round,” Shanahan said. “And I think by him playing and Robert not playing, it gives us a chance to have a few options for our organization that we wouldn’t normally have, and the safety of our quarterback going into the offseason is preserved….And we’re still getting a chance to see a guy that we’ve got a lot of confidence in go out there and play. And his value can only go up. It cannot go down. It can only go up.”

The Redskins don't have their own first round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft with it going to the St. Louis Rams as part of the Robert Griffin III trade.

Robert Griffin III is privately "extremely angry" with the Washington Redskins' decision to bench him for the remainder of the season due to "performance" issues, according to reporting from Mike Silver of NFL.com.

Mike Shanahan's reasoning for the decision is that he's afraid of Griffin getting injured and missing his offseason program for the second straight year.

Griffin tore his ACL and LCL in last season's playoffs.

The Washington Redskins don't plan on changing their offense with Kirk Cousins starting the final three games.

"The same stuff you guys have been seeing,” Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. “People think we ran a totally different offense last year. Yeah, we added in the zone read, but after that, every single play-pass that we’ve done were the same ones you guys saw with Rex [Grossman], the same ones you guys saw with Donovan [McNabb].” 

The zone read was added for Robert Griffin III, but that was the only major change.

“All we did [last year] is add the zone read into an already pretty successful offense,” Shanahan said. 

John Madden disagrees strongly with Mike Shanahan's decision to sit Robert Griffin III for the remainder of the 2013 season.

"I like Mike Shanahan, and I'm not talking behind his back," Madden said, "but when you say something like that, you know that's not right. You're not going to sacrifice regular season games. There's only 16 of them a year. You're not going to sacrifice regular season games for an offseason program.

"I don't understand what they're doing. It's hard to take well we're watching out for RGIII's health and his welfare. You know, if you felt (that way) about his health and welfare, you probably would have done something about it a year ago, or maybe even earlier in the season, when he started the regular season without any preseason practice."

Madden also believes the Washington Redskins are compromising the integrity of the game.

"This is still regular-season football," Madden explained. "Draft order, that's one small thing, but you still owe it to the people that are playing, that are still in the playoff picture. And when you can affect that and you don't affect it with an all-out performance, then I think that affects the integrity of the game ... If you're in the regular season, there's only one way to play, and that's to play your best people to win the game, every regular season game."

Robert Griffin III will be inactive for Sunday's game between the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons.

Kirk Cousins will start at quarterback and Rex Grossman will be the backup.

Mike Shanahan appears to be coaching his final games with the Redskins and this decision may be a move to expedite his dismissal. 

Mike Shanahan is considering sitting Robert Griffin III for the remainder of the season.

Shanahan is concerned about Griffin's health.

Kirk Cousins would start in Griffin's place.

"I've got to do what's best for the organization," Shanahan said. "If we feel the best thing for the organization is doing that for Robert, then hopefully Robert will understand why we're doing it. We're doing it because he's a franchise quarterback and we want him to be able to go into the offseason and get full preparation and be ready for next year rather than playing one of the next three games and all of a sudden he sets himself back with a possible injury, whatever that may be."

Shanahan acknowledged that a decision about his future with the Redskins could be made in the offseason, while stating he wants to return.

"You always want to come back," Shanahan said. "I love these [players]. At the end of the season we'll get a chance, Dan (Snyder) and I, to sit down and decide -- he'll make the final decision -- on what's in the best interest of the Washington Redskins. I'll give my opinion on what I think. Obviously he'll make the final decision. ... We've got guys working extremely hard, so I would like nothing more than to be with them."
