Andrews More Concerned With Shanahan's Use Of Griffin Than Knee

Oct 16, 2014 11:56 PM

Robert Griffin III has been medically cleared to start for the Washington Redskins in Week 1.

Griffin is returning from major surgery to repair his knee.

Dr. James Andrews is less concerned about Griffin’s knee and “much more on how the team plans to use him,” according to a source.

Andrews had previously told the media that Mike Shanahan had Griffin reenter a game against the Baltimore Ravens following an injury without examining him.

“He didn’t even let us look at him,” Andrews said.  “He came off the field, walked through the sidelines, circled back through the players, and took off back to the field. It wasn’t our opinion.

“We didn’t even get to touch him or talk to him. Scared the hell out of me.”

Be The GM: Robert Griffin III Or Jason Pierre-Paul

May 18, 2014 5:11 AM

Robert Griffin III takes on Jason Pierre-Paul in the final second round NFC matchup of our 'Be The GM' series. Griffin defeated Dez Bryant in the first round with 85 percent of the vote, while Pierre-Paul narrowly got past LeSean McCoy with 57 percent.

Griffin exceeded the most bullish expectations during his rookie season, completing 258 of 393 pass attempts for a passer rating of 102.4 with 20 touchdowns coming against just five interceptions. Griffin also carried the ball 120 times for 815 yards and seven touchdowns, becoming the type of dual-threat quarterback that makes it seem like you're watching a video game.

Griffin had a 9-6 record as a starter as he led the Redskins back into the playoffs.

The only issue with Griffin, who won't turn 24 until February, is his long-term health. Griffin tore his ACL and LCL last season and we will need to see if he regains his prior form physically and whether he can make adjustments to his style of play to avoid injuries without compromising the aspects of his game that make him great.

Pierre-Paul is entering his fourth NFL season, but he won't run 25 until the end of February. Pierre-Paul immediately showed promise at getting to the quarterback in his rookie season and then completely broke out in 2011 with 16.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Pierre-Paul's production trailed off considerably last season as he battled persistent back issues that eventually led to surgery in June.

Assuming he returns healthy, Pierre-Paul can return to overwhelming offensive linemen with his combination of size, strength and quickness.

Robert Griffin III To Start Week 1

May 18, 2014 8:30 AM

Robert Griffin III will start for the Washington Redskins in their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Griffin has practiced for the past two weeks without any setbacks as he returns from a surgically repaired knee.

Griffin is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews on Thursday to get medical clearance, but the visit is a formality.

"If I had to run a 40 today at the combine in my underwear, I feel like I could run a 4.3-something," said Griffin.

Six NFL Head Coaches Have Total Roster Control

Sep 30, 2014 7:20 PM

The NFL has six head coaches with absolute final say on player personnel decisions in Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots, Mike Shanahan of the Washington Redskins, Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints, Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, Chip Kelly of the Philadelphia Eagles and Jeff Fisher of the St. Louis Rams.

Belichick and Payton are the longest tenured coaches of the group, while Kelly and Fisher were hired over the past two offseasons.

The NFL's other head coaches have varying degrees of control depending on how the power dynamic with the general manager is structured.

Gruden Would Offer First Round Pick To Redskins For Kirk Cousins

Jun 17, 2014 11:02 PM

Kirk Cousins is the Washington Redskins' backup to Robert Griffin III at quarterback.

Similar to when Matt Schaub backed up Michael Vick with the Atlanta Falcons, Cousins has a lot of value around the NFL.

"If I were a coach, I'd offer a first-round pick to the Redskins to get Kirk Cousins on my team," said Jon Gruden.

Be The GM: Robert Griffin III Or Dez Bryant

Oct 17, 2014 12:36 AM

The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins are perennially linked, so we follow suit with having Dez Bryant lined up against Robert Griffin III in our 'Be The GM' series.

Dez Bryant fell to 24th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft amid off the field issues and after a few issues early in his career, the Cowboys have done a great job in protecting him. With glimpses of excellence in his first two seasons, Bryant put it all together in 2012 with 92 catches for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Bryant combination of speed and strength makes him the type of weapon that will always be able to impact the game.

Bryant ranked 35th on NFL.com's list ahead of the 2013 season and he won't turn 25 until November.
