Sean Payton: Taysom Hill Contract More Work Than Drew Brees Deal

Feb 20, 2020 8:45 AM

Drew Brees plans to return and play for the New Orleans Saints next season.

Sean Payton told WWL Radio on Wednesday that the two sides have always wrapped up contract negotiations "in an efficient manner," so he's not worried about the quarterback.

"I think that won't be any different this time around," the coach said.

Payton, however, expects Taysom Hill's situation to be much more difficult.

"If he was unsigned prior to the league year, I would anticipate us really paying close attention to that and looking at that first-round tender," Payton said of Hill. "That'll take some time, relative to his contract because it's unique in what he's doing now and what we feel like he can be and what he can do when Drew does retire. That will probably take a little more work than the contract that Mickey [Loomis] does with Drew."

The Saints have until the start of the new league year on March 18 to tender Hill.

Taysom Hill Will Try To Leave Saints If They Don't View Him As QB1

Feb 10, 2020 8:56 PM

Taysom Hill would like to play quarterback, whether it is with the New Orleans Saints or another team.

"I definitely view myself as a franchise quarterback," Hill said in a recent interview with the Associated Press' Rob Maaddi. "I think as you look at the other questions: Is it New Orleans? Is it somewhere else? As you go into free agency, this is the time that you start to find out how people view you. We haven't gotten into free agency long enough to really know how these guys view me and we'll just handle it as it comes."

The Saints are not sure what to do at quarterback as they wait on a decision from Drew Brees on whether or not he will retire.

If the Saints don't view Hill as a QB1, he will attempt to leave.

"I have loved every second of my time (in New Orleans). So do I want to leave? The fact of the matter is no, I don't," Hill said. "But as you look at free agency, you have to find the right opportunity for you. You have to find the situation to take care of your family. I want to play quarterback in this league, and if New Orleans don't view me that way, well then I have to leave. That's really where we're at."

Saints Expect Taysom Hill To Receive Offer From Rival Teams

Feb 11, 2020 7:43 AM

The New Orleans Saints are anticipating Taysom Hill receiving interest as a restricted free agent.

“I think someone is going to make him an offer,” Sean Payton recently told Peter King of Football Morning in America. “But the first thing the fan has to understand is . . . if we tender Taysom [at the first-round level], the team that makes the offer on him and signs him to an offer understands they’re going to give up a first-round pick if we don’t match. That’s easier to do if you’re pick 22, 23, 24, 25. We might very well see it if it’s a team in the second half of the [first round].”
