Doctors have diagnosed six more rib fractures in Drew Brees, bringing the total up to 11. Brees has eight fractures on his left side and three on his right.

Brees' doctors, however, have been encouraged by his improvement in lung function and the continued dissipation of the pneumothorax suffered last week.

It is not yet clear how much time Brees will miss with the injuries. 

The New Orleans Saints will start Taysom Hill at quarterback instead of Jameis Winston.

Hill took all of the starter reps at practice this week.

The move comes as a surprise as Winston is the more experienced quarterback and replaced Drew Brees in the second half last week. The Saints, however, have maintained that they view Hill as a potential starting quarterback.

The Saints are unsure how long Brees will be out of the lineup.

The Saints inserted Jameis Winston into the game to replace Brees. 

The New Orleans Saints aren't sure if Drew Brees will play in Week 11 after he injured his ribs on Sunday.

Brees will have an MRI and X-rays to determine the extent of the injury, which occurred during the Saints' 27-13 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

"I'm just taking it one day at a time. I've done that this entire season. And I'll continue to do that. I'm not sure what tomorrow holds," Brees said. "But you can know I'm gonna do everything I can to be as effective as I possibly can come next week.

"I mean, nothing's a long-term thing. It's just a matter of how long it's gonna be. And honestly, I really don't know. It's not something, quite to this extent, that I've experienced."

Brees, 41, played the final eight minutes of the first half after absorbing a big hit by the 49ers' Kentavius Street.

Brees said he felt worse after the halftime break, so Jameis Winston played most of the second half in his place.

Drew Brees and Michael Thomas are expected to play for the New Orleans Saints in their Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Thomas hasn't played since Week 1, coincidentally also against the Buccaneers.

The NFL has suspended Javon Wims for two games for punching C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Gardner-Johnson was previously punched by Michael Thomas during a New Orleans Saints' practice.

Cameras captured Gardner-Johnson ripping out Wims' mouthpiece and jabbing a finger in the face of fellow Bears receiver Anthony Miller on previous plays, Gardner-Johnson insisted Monday that "I'm innocent."

"It ain't got nothing to do with me. If he's acting out, that's on him," Gardner-Johnson said. "It wasn't no incident. We won the game. I mean, everybody, it's a lot of he said, he said. Ain't nothing happened. Nobody got spit on.

The San Francisco 49ers have traded Kwon Alexander to the New Orleans Saints in a package for Kiko Alonso.

The 49ers had shopped Alexander over the past few months but he has not been healthy.
