Sean Payton Doesn't Think ESPN Should Zoom On Play Sheet

Dec 18, 2014 1:14 PM

Sean Payton said he doesn't think opponents can really glean anything valuable from seeing the zoomed-in look of his play-calling sheet during ESPN's "Monday Night Football" broadcast, but he thinks they crossed the line.

"Pretty soon they'll be in our bench area helping out with the play calls," cracked Payton, who said the access of cameras and microphones seems to increase every year. "I don't think there's much to it. There's a lot of terminology. But I am kind of surprised it showed up on the TV screen. … I wouldn't put it on if I was ESPN."

When asked if there's anything he could use from an opponents' play sheet, Payton said, "There'd be nothing to really do with it. You look at their terminology. There's nothing that it's really giving you. ... It's 50 different names of plays, they're not numbered in any particular order."

Drew Brees Critical Of Report About Saints' Drafting QB

Dec 3, 2014 5:41 PM

Drew Brees criticized a report that indicated the New Orleans Saints are interested in drafting a quarterback with a high pick in the hopes of finding his eventual replacement.

“Something like that — I know it has absolutely no validity to it,” Brees said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “A lot of time you can look at who’s writing that stuff and you can say ‘All right this guy is trying to make a splash or trying to make a name for himself’ whatever it might be.

“In a lot of cases I’m not sure where they get their information, if they just completely make it up or if there are sources that are their cousins.”

Brees is turning 36 in January. His play has declined this year. He’s due to make $38.5 million over the last two years of his contract, and the Saints have looming salary cap problems.
